People that claim to want a dog to "check in" lol

I've only ever heard people say that on this board. Do they really want a dog to check in, or is it their dog just checks in when he won't hunt? I don't have a world beater but I better be pulling my dogs off a tree somewhere or they will be worm food. What's the deal with a dog that checks in? Why?

I like you, Dont check in, How bout go get treed !!! lol. If it has to go find a coon then go find it, gas is expensive to drive around and find it a hot track it can run !!! Check in to many times I say it dont hunt very well. I dont need it to check in , I just seen it !!!

I live within 30 minutes of my State capital, therefore the area I hunt has smaller patches of woods due to development. Folks want to live outside the city, and commute so farmland is smaller tracts.
I prefer a dog to hunt about 2 to 400 yards, if it strikes don't come back but keep on trailing til it trees. However, if a strike is not made I prefer it to circle back in and we can try another spot.
This will hopefully keep the dog out of roads and subdivisions which surround my hunting spots.

I live in thin Coons !!! Hunt alot of Creeks and branches and When my hounds arn't pickin up a coon track in the direction their headed I want their butts back so I can cast them in a different direction of a branch in the creek ..

Way too much Privite Property that Do Not like Hounds running on it !!!!!

if they dont find a track on the same ridge i cut them loose they better come back. like the other guy said i hunt alot of small patches of woods so if they dont start a track in that spot come back and load up so we can go somewhere else. i hate a dog that hunts so deep that you cant hear them. if i wanted to hunt 3 ridges over i would have droped over there.

I like a dog to get hooked no matter how far it has to go but i have buddies that like their dog to check in and even train for that if their dogs go 700 to 900 yards and don't strike they tone them and get them in

I usually hut 3-4 hounds by Myself at a time ..

I agree I hunt very large tracts of national forest frequently with limited road access to just drive around and pick the dog up or get close. I like a dog that will check back in if they don't hit a track after 30 45 minutes. At this point I don't do any comp hunts either. My old dog that just passed away really spoiled me with being able to rig hunt, on a night where I just wanted to make a quick drop it helped a lot to have her there. If I didn't have a dog that would check in with the thin coon I would be hunting the dog all night and possibly into he next day if they just straight lined it. The areas I hunt are awful rough in places dogs can get out of hearing quick on an old cold track and the GPS reception isn't great in most places either.

i like my dogs too hunt 6 to 800 yards then check back in. i train mine too come back in when i tone them. they are a pleasure too hunt when you can control them. i have one dog she will go till she trees a coon somwhere if you let her but that isnt much of a enjoyable hunt if you ask me so i try too keep her from getting deep. she dont get hunted as much as the dogs that checks back in for that reason.

why would someone want their dog too run rampeade without any control ?? maybe they are to lazy too get off the tail gate too walk threw the woods!!!!

Most pleasure dogs are expected to find a track,tree the coon or return to cast.If your hound gets out of pocket and lost for some time,you should find him near where you dropped him.Doesn't always make the best comp dog,but most coon hunters dont comp hunt.

I like a dog to check in every now and then. And as far as comp huntin goes it aint much diffrent. If you make a drop and he trees two miles away what have you gained? Your not gonna hear em. You've lost points and valuable huntin time in that two hr hunt.

He aint gonna win if you can't hear him. I've got an independent, accurate, straight coon dog. And most of the time them "night rockets" run over tracks that he picks up. To each his own i guess.

A better question would be why would you not want one to check back in?

A dog with not enough natural go will either come back or just make a bad tree. I wonder how many of these never come back dogs just get treed on a den rather then come back because someone thinks they can beat more go into one.

If I turn a dog into a patch I want him to hunt that woods. If I want him to hunt the woods a mile across the field I will personally drive him there. If I turn him into a big section I like them to go. I don't care if one checks in, one that goes till treed with a coon is also fine with me. The next time your dog makes a den tree after forty minutes and doesn't sound convinced I'd be willing to bet that he doesn't have enough drive to actually go find one so he's giving up. If they're gonna do that I'd rather he just come back to the truck.

I'm middle aged, over weight, would rather sit on a tailgate and listen, then drive all over the dang country looking and listening for my dogs. FYI: NO TRACKING SYSTEM! Never needed one. The dogs below would check out a patch, run by me as a check in or actually stop say 'Hello' and leave for another patch and that is the way I like it. I don't want one that lights out of the box full bore, he!! bent for wood 6 miles away and have a den or slick tree. Even if they have a coon, still no fun. I like to listen to the chase and then turn from bawl to tree. Guy once said to me' Would you rather hunt with your dog or for your dog?' made sense, I like with!

im like most coonhunters now.ive been shot at,screemed at,cursed at and had law called to me because i got close to someones house while hunting.usually the people have just recently moved in.whats even worse is they only own 1 or 2 acres and im not on theirs.the tracts of land i usually hunt,if a dog hunts out over 1000yrds certain directions it could turn into a bad night with neighbors.you couldnt give me a go yonder dog.mine will tree most coons within that range,usually 2 or 3 but if struck will finish no matter how far.its just no fun or too dangerous to hunt where i hunt to have a go yonder dog.thats jmo and it dont mean nothing,if you like the go yonder dog, more power to you.ill be sittin on tailgate hollerin u back if u can hear me.good hunting.

Dont like them wide hunting dogs no more thats the reason i got rid of my walkers and switched to mountain curs,really glad i did.

I know of two life long coonhunters, that the last dogs they owned, were go yonders . I honestly believe , those dogs wore them out. On another note if you look at your garmin, and a dog is ripping off 50 yards an update, I've got news for you. He's not hunting !

I like em' to hunt one direction to my satisfaction and then fly by and head the other way or take direction ... it's not lack of drive , it's just instinct to please and training.

Some dogs even pick up on your cues to the effect that if you send em' from the road and really talk em' up ... they know to go deep and if you are strolling along a creek , they will patch and come by to check in and go another direction.

There used to be combination dogs that knew rabbit and squirrel were ok to run in the day and even work stock, but only coon or possum at night and don't run the cows when out hunting ... that's just good dog work and training .. and alot of time.

Folks don't do that anymore ... a dog spends most days in a pen or on a chain and they don't develop into as well rounded of a hound .... but , whatever floats your boat.

Quit drinking coffee at the truck and go hunting!!!
