Progress

It looks to me that someone in our breed is doing something right. I see and hear of more reddogs winning now than ever. That is in UKC and $KC. Not many years ago it wouldn't be ten dogs in the running for the $KC breed race. Something is changing. Who ever it is and what ever they are doing. I hope they keep up the good work. I think that RED world beater is just around the corner.
Take this and run with it, let's have some fun. COME ON !

It is guys just like you Don who are trying to produce better redbones than we currently have. People who love the breed...but realize that it can be better. There is no magical shortcut to advancing this breed in the competition world. Just good crosses, smart training, hard hunting....and showing up to compete with dogs that are tuned up and ready to win. Some get it and some don't....but the results show who is on the right track and for a Winner like Bud Hood (a walker man with close to $60k in money won to be hunting a redbone out of your dog.....I would say you are proving you are on the right track. Keep up the good work and get those pups in the hands of competition hunters where everyone can "see and hear" about their progress in their record of wins and not just their owners opinions. It is hard to argue with a good win record

Arrow Progress

I have only stepped in on someone else's hard work. Jason and I bought the dogs we have. We did try to be very selective of what we started over with. My mind sees, reproducer X reproducer gets you a reproducer. This program is proving to work out ok. I hope we are headed in the right direction.time will tell.
There are some fine folks, doing some very good things for our breed . I thank each and every one them.

I wont say that redbones are breaking new ground in competition hunts...but they sure are expanding into hunts they were seldom seen in before....and proving they can compete and win in those areas.

Only have to look

A person only has to look at the current Top reproducers list to realize things are improving. I know that some do not believe that the list means much but the numbers show us different. Compare the list from 10 years ago to todays list. The improvements can be clearly seen by looking at how the numbers have improved. Just 10years ago it was very rare for a litter to produce just 3 titled offspring . Those numbers are now getting to be the norm. When we look at the rate of improvement I would predict we will see double the % of reproducing rate in the next 6 to 10 years.
What is funny to me is that the biggest complaint I've heard over and over again was that the breed doesn't work together and that people only want to work on their own stuff. Many still say this but some of the biggest improvements are coming from those very lines that stay true to culling and selecting within a tight family line. Once these higher producing crosses become even more defined the chances increase for many more people to purchase dogs and build on those lines strengths to create their own line . Many are doing just that currently. The future is bright and the numbers prove it.

The list

The monthly top ten list is one of the better tools we have. I study it often. I don't clame to be a breeder at all, but I do want to have winner on my leash when I show up. I always hope to produce a dog that is better than the last one I pushed. I have a lot to learn, but with the help of others we WILL get there.

Careful Kelly, or some will call you "line blind"...or say your in a clique for concentrating on one line....lol
The fact is...no breed would be where it is today if breeders had not done exactly that....and we could move ahead alot faster if more breeders would concentrate their efforts on their favorite line to lock in those desirable traits that line is known for. Smart and successful breeders may seem line blind to those who are not experienced breeders....but to those who have been breeding for years....they see them as something else....dedicated to improving a particular line through proven techniques that produce results that are getting more and more repeatable and predictable as time goes on.
That should be a goal of every breeder.....to be able to predict with some degree of certainty the kind of pups a particular cross will produce. We are not able to do this like we need to be able to do this....but we are getting closer.
There are several concentrated lines out there being developed by several groups of guys and each line is a little different. The difference in the traits of these lines is a direct reflection of what the main breeders of those lines prefer in a dog and it stands to reason if some of those breeders are competition hunters....then they are going to breed more towards that purpose....and if they are pleasure hunters....they may breed more for dogs that are suited for that purpose. But when the time does come for each of these lines to make outcrosses....we now have several options to do so. Options that we didn't have ten, or 20 years ago. This breed needs different strains being developed for different strengths along the way so that when we have taken one strain to the point it is ready for an outcross...we can select from several other strains the one which will give us the best chance of adding or strengthening a trait we are looking for. Smart and selective breeding will produce the dogs that we_want on the end of our leash. We are making progress....not as fast as many would like...but progress none the less. Evolution is a very slow process and we as redbone breeders are trying to speed up that process...but there are limits to how fast we can do that. The best and fastest way is to study genetics and past crosses and figure out what went right when a great litter happened. What pattern keeps repeating over and over again in great crosses which produced above average results? Then make attempts to repeat similar crosses with key reproducers in the right position for the genes of those dogs to pair up and produce the top dogs that are the goal of most breeders. Genetics and breeding are a proven science....and just like with science class in school....we will get better grade and better results the more we study....so everyone keep doing your homework and keep track of what works and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to question things that have no valid proof behind them. There are alot of old wives tales and other theories that may seem to make sense when you hear them...but ask yourself where is the proof.
There have been a few that have been talked about recently on this forum...like repeat crosses and crossbreeding. They have both been done for years and many people swear by them...but when held up to scrutiny....the proof is not to be found that either produce as good as other methods that breeders are using today. As a breed we are getting better. But with better, more educated breeding.....we could be the best! We have dogs for it we have to passion for it.....we just need to roll up our sleeves, get to work and prove that we have the will for it.
We fight and argue as we strive to produce better redbones....that is the passion showing through. But at the end of the day....I don't think there is another breed out there that is working harder to breed better dogs than the redbone breed. I know some have passed us....but the race isn't over and its going to come down to who wants it more...and who is willing to work the hardest....and I believe that is us
