my 16 month old male is treein in holes and was wonderin how to break him off of doin it..

if you have a shock collar bust his butt but make sure you know he is in a hole best thing to do is walk to where he is and make sure i never shock a dog untill i know for sure thier doing what i dont want them to do if you dont have a collar beat his butt good if hes got any smarts he will learn fast jmo

Treeing in Hole

I have a question, if dog is running a coon and said coon goes into a hole then is the dog wrong. Understand you want the dog to put coon up tree, but the coon only knows he wants to get away. SO if you shock dog on hole then would you do it on Den Tree especially if hole in tree is at base of tree? Just curious

SMARTER THAN DOG

I'm 57 and been hunting since I was 6 or 7 , I seem to get those dogs that think their smarter than me and always come up with an excuse not to get their buts whipped. But you have some good points on not shocking till you are completely sure, seen some guys shock dogs at night that were running with my dog accused all dogs of running deer or fox and they started shocking (it was a fast race for 3/4 mile, swamp coon) they busted their dogs with shock collar and mine treed the coon. THeir dogs were right there with mine and it was a coon not fast game. Need to be very sure.

I'm a firm believer in the electronic trainers, BUT, I don't like to shock a dog in a hole. With the Garmins it is so much easier to find a dog when they are holed. I don't like to use electric when the game they put there is a coon. I do like to take a good green switch to a backside hanging out of a hole and sending them on their way....unless it's a grinner in the hole and then the electric is my sure fire reaction.

you got to be smarter than the dog lol im 62 been huntin sense i was alittle fellar 2 but my hunting is been very limited last 3 yrs im in the early stages of parkisons diease dont get around real good buddy comes gets me some we go behind my house he gotta close hunting dog and we can ride his big red on the hill and its easy walkin

If that dog is Treeing and digging in holes then (depending you have them in your area) I'd say he's running armadillos. I wouldn't do too much until I found out. However, if it is armadillos get one out dead and beat that dog with it until it comes apart. Hell stop then! Or catch one alive and put him in a barrel with it for a few mins. And roll them around the yard. He'll want out cause after a few mins. That Diller will claw his hide off. problem solved!

I am breaking mine and don't care if 40 coon are huddled up in one hole. If the coon made it to a hole my hounds better move on. That's just the way it has to be and only my opinion.

I have spent many hours sitting outside of a hole waiting for something to happen. We don't have armadillos here and more often then not, the coon will get pulled out. I guess in these parts, I am certain every time that it is a coon in that hole, so I will not shock a dog for going in or baying at it.

Holes are not ideal, but the way I see it, the dog was let loose, it found a coon. Can't discipline it for being right and finding what I wanted it to.

Yep, I feel the way you do. If its not Dillers and it is a coon...not a problem to me. I live on the Brazos River and I run coon in hole under the bank plenty of times. It makes for a HELL of a good fight Too.

I knew a man that had a dog that would dig holes inside the dog pen and bark the whole time it was digging. he would catch the dog doing this and fill the hole with water and take the dog and shove his head in and hold it. Yep, sounds kind of cruel, but the dog stopped digging. You might have a hard time filling a armadillo hole up with water in the woods. Good luck.

Holes

The down side is I have seen dogs get so deep in holes and pipes that it has taken hours, sometimes days to get them out. I have also seen a few dogs dig a few out and must have really liked it because they just kept getting worse and worse about treeing in the ground to where more of their tracks were ending in the ground rather than in a tree. I have been breaking them from treeing in the ground for about the last 25 years and it sure has made my hunting much more enjoyable.
