HTX Hunts

Our club has had 3 HTX Hunts, everyone seems to really enjoy them. In the 3 hunts, we have hunted 33 dogs with 18 passes.
Just wondering how many other clubs are having HTX Hunts? and how people like them? and what percentage of dogs are passing? and do you think these test are a fair evaluation of a dogs ability?

I have'nt made one yet, but really wanting to. Not many clubs close having them, ones that do have them on friday night and I have to work every saturday and it makes it hard. I will make one later this year, somewhere? I think its a good thing after what I've seen in some night hunts, then again they could lie the same.

Got One Tonight At Caulfield Mo.

If I can get off work on time tonight i'm going to a HTX hunt at Caulfield Mo. There have been several enter them locally and several passes. I went on one before and really enjoyed it. Never got one treed on the outside (within an hour) that night, but liked it anyways. Alot more layed back atmosphere than a night hunt.

Our club started holding Hunt Tests right after they were introduced. Me and my Dad earned the HTX or HTX2 degree on 6 dogs and have had passes on a couple other dogs. I've inspected probably over 20 other dogs. My take on the Hunt Tests is in My Area a dog should pass at least 80% of the hunt tests entered. A dog can still be a dog that can tree a coon but pass a lower percentages of it's tests and still earn the degree. A good started young dog should be able to earn the degree fairly easy but the ones that pass them time after time are going to be pretty nice dogs that most people would be happy to hunt. Bottom line is that they only prove that a dog can tree a coon by itself, doesn't prove how well or fast they can do it.

Overall I enjoy participating in the hunt tests. They are more laid back like a glorified pleasure hunt and there really isn't anything to argue about, although I did have a discussion one night when a handler and me had a little disagreement on whether something was a spider eye or a coon eye. lol. I think more people should try them. They are fun even when I am inspecting other peoples dogs. Also gives a person a chance to see how other peoples dogs operate by themselves.

Yes, the areas where the coons are thick it is a little easier to pass a HTX. Down here in Central Texas, there are not a lot of coons, and this time of year they are ruiting. Both makes it a little harder to tree one on the outside. I think the average is only 1 out of 3 pass.
The way our club does it really works good. Half the dogs hunt the first hour. Second half hunts the second round. If someone can't inspect, for one reason or another, we have older hunters that fill in and inspect.
Last night, I inspected on our second round. Hunted with a Nite Ch Bluetick owned by Bobby Isbell. Bo did a fine job on a bad old feeder track. Took him a while, but in the end he had the meat.
The first round, I hunted my young female. She had one easy quick coon. Then she stuck a running raskel that covered a little distance. Finally, after about 40 minutes, he took a tree.
Both my outings was a great time.

I have hunted in several at my club. My female has two passes. More Hunts without a pass. I enjoy them. Wish more clubs in my area had them.

I think we need to encourge all clubs to hold HTX Hunts. It is a win-win situation for everybody.

I know that here in NW MO some of the guys that have entered them say it is pretty tough to get a pass. I had been told that a gr nite had entered a half dozen times or so and still didn't have a pass.(this came from a judge) This guys opinion was that these tests really sort out who hunts a "me-too" dog in competition hunts. You don't have to go to many competition hunts to know that sometimes the dog that does very little all night sometimes gets lucky and pulls out 225 to win the cast at the end of it.

I would like to see them grow in popularity too.

I totally agree! My opinion is that a dog should be required to have an HTX prior to being given ANY hunting degree. JMO,,,,,,,Jim Harper

From what I have seen from inspecting other dogs is that just about any dog should be able to pass at least some of the HTX hunts that they are entered in. I've seen a couple that I thought might take a few entries to get their 3 passes, but eventually they would. Also, most good dogs will pass most but will have an occasion where they won't due to dens or circled trees or something like that. I'm in the hills of southeastern Ohio so we don't have a great coon population, but treeing a coon and seeing it is a reasonable expectation in an hour. With our hunting here, if a dog trees a coon in an hour he/she usually doesn't have enough time to mess up twice to get two faults, so treeing a coon is usually enough to pass and not have to worry about the two faults. Now in thinner coon, I could see where, even with a coon dog, treeing a coon in the hour might be a problem. In thicker coon, I could see where treeing the coon would be easy but staying out of trouble with the two faults might be harder and would take a pretty clean dog to stay out of trouble. So the pass and fail ratio's for different areas should be somewhat different.

MO varies a lot

I have seen a lot of night hunts have 2 or 3 casts see a coon and the other 8 to 10 casts never see a coon. Of course the thicker the coon and the better the conditions the easier it would be to get a pass.

It sounds like a lot of fun either way. :-)

Yes, thicker coons does make it a little easier to get a pass, but I would rather have one coon.... one decent track.... then a solid tree with the coon looking down.
Too many think coons and my dogs would not know how to act. LOL
