Help with live traps

Having trouble with coons stealing the bait out of traps!
Any ideas?

For trapshy city coon I use plastic tie strips and fasten down a peanut butter jar or a empty can to put the bait in. JMHO

trap

sounds to me like your setting the trigger to tight i set mine real light i get mine set down solid on the ground then i set it and take a small stick and see how much pressure it takes to set it off you just have to fool with it till you get it right to light or to heavy aint good jmo

Poke some holes in a can of sweet taters. Tie to trap with a hanger. It want get that. That's with real problem coons though. Usually a honeybun in the back of trigger with a stick stuck through it will get most of em. The key is put little wire around the back of trap so they can't reach through.

Pound a hole in the ground and put bait in hole...set trap/pan over hole

Marshmallows under the pan, simple and easy.

Posted by jkidd1 on 03-08-2013 02:16 PM:

I use bread with peanut butter on it. I lay the pb side down in the back of the trap and press down on it. They gota work for it and it will set your trap off. This is the only way and bait I've ever used, works real good.

That's my secret,works every time.

place whatever you are baiting with in an old stocking and tie it inside the trap.one stocking will make at least three sets.just cut off what you need and tie a knot in it.works good for me.

The simplest thing to do so you won't have to worry about it again is wire hardware cloth with rabbit cage clips around the outside of your trap near the bait area. Personally, I only use live traps that have smaller than 1"x 1" mesh in the rear of the trap, and a non gravity door lock.

Also, beware if coons are reaching in they may already be trap shy. Yes, if coon have been caught before they can become trap shy.

Throw you some vinilla waffers under the pan that the coon has to step on to set it off three or four will do...you'll get the coon

Real simple.put peanut butter and jelly on a slice of bread and put it under the trap.Works like a charm.

Posted by Lodi Loner on 03-12-2013 02:31 AM:

Use pancake syrup in a squirt bottle pour thru top onto bait bait pan area they will dig at it even after caught . Coons that are using your trap as a feeder bucket will be caught on the first visit.

Yup, except for putting the trap on the ground. I have caught far too many skunks that way.

I like this idea

Use a cufff trap, with fish flavored cat food you will catch cooon quick, much more faster than a cage trap.
