Thinkin Garmin Alpha

I'm thinking about buying a garmin alpha ... Any input good and bad is welcome... I know I can't carry it in a Ukc hunt and it wont track 30s or 40s.. Thanks in advance... Seth

So far, all of our Alpha equipment has been far more reliable than the Astro stuff was. Nothing bad so far.

I saw on facebook tonight that Verizon has one out. Ol boy is trying it out. He was at 3 miles and still had it last I saw. Might be something to look at. Had a google map on the screen looked like. Use it with any phone. So still probably couldn't use it in Ukc.

I bought one and love it Seth. Worth every penny and the birdseye is worth its weight in gold! I dnt think you will be disappointed.

Best unit out there right now. No complaints with mine so far.

Tracking is better than the Astro.

Ecollar is better than anything out there from TriTronics or Sportdog.

I have one that randomly shuts off. When it's on I really like it. Sometimes it does it 6-7 times a night. I'm currently in communication with garmin to try and resolve it. I'm pleased with garmin's support, but frustrated with the alpha. There are others having this problem too.

I got an Alpha from the first shipment last year and like it alot.

Posted by garminguru on 03-07-2013 07:10 PM:

I would have to ask, do you own a garmin astro now and a shocking system of some kind?
If your answer is yes then I would not recommend the alpha if the units you have are working well.

I posted this question in a thread of it's own because I didn't want to seem like I'm hijacking this one, but my thread didn't get a reply so I thought I would hijack this one. haha

Anyway, I was looking for information about add on maps like the Birds Eye from Garmin or the micro chip thing from huntinggpsmaps.com. I've heard good things about the hungting gps, but its pretty spendy at $100 bucks. I really like Google Earth which makes me think the Birds Eye is the best option, but I'm not sure what you actually get with the birds eye? Do you buy maps for an entire state or just a topo grid or ???

Thanks

SETH, THE ALPHA IS DEFINETLY WORTH THE MONEY. I'VE HAD BOTH THE 220/320 AND DC30/DC40 UNITS. THEY WERE NICE , BUT WOULD ONLY TRACK CONSITENTLY AT ABOUT 1/2 MILE AROUND THIS AREA. AND, THAT WAS WITHA LOT OF LOSSED SIGNALS. (NOT USING A ROOF MOUNT ANTENNA). THE ALPHA WILL TRACK OVER 1 1/2 MILES EVEN WHEN DRIVING AROUND THE SECTION. THE COUPLE OF TIMES I'VE USED THE SHOCKER IT SEEMS TO BE AS GOOD AS ANY. I ALSO REALLY LIKE THE ABILITY TO REMOTELY TURN THE COLLAR LIGHT ON AND OFF. HUNTIN AROUND THESE ROADS AND BETWEEN HOUSES YOU WILL LIKE IT TOO!! GIVE ME A CALL IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS.

The collar has a light on it ?? Is it very bright?? compared to a sunburst collar or like one of those tracking lights?? If it does I didn't relize that. That is three tools in one. Also if I had one of these and went to a hunt as long as I left the handheld in the truck I could keep the collar on the dog untill there was Time out and than get the unit out to track?? Or since there is a shocker It is a no no nomatter what? Sorry I have not hunted in 12 years starting to get back in and just trying to figure out if this is the system for me.

Same question here about the light?????? I've got lighted Marshall collars and they are very bright. In open Swampland you can keep up with your dog very nicely and they're very safe on the road!!!! I love a bright lighted collar!!!!
