pa hunting laws

buddy told me if you hunt pa or run dogs this yr you have to have a out of state small game lic me and my buddy has a freind in pa we go hunt on his farm alille during coon season but he is a pa lic and carrys the gun and does the shooting we are from wv anybody know if this is true

Posted by mauser06 on 03-04-2013 04:47 PM:

Id say if you own the dogs that are doin the huntin you need a license...furtakers license not small game...

Out of season i dont know if you need a license to train or not...

During competition hunts the clubs have permits etc so you are covered during the hunt....

Call the regional office and ask for a law enforcement wildlife conservation officer.....dont bother asking the dispatcher you may or may not get the right answer..

Now, if you tagged along, no dog, no gun, etc you may get away without having a license...anytime you participate you need a license though...driving deer with no gun..same thing l..you need a license...your dog is chasing coon...my bet is you need a license

TRAINING

Page 32 of the pa. 2012/2013 Pa hunting & trapping digest
book that you get with a hunting license.
no closed season for training dogs
a hunting or furtakers license is NOT required for training dogs
dogs may not be trained on private land on Sunday wihout landowner permission
may not carry a rifle, shotgun, bow and arrows while training dogs
there are a few more rules, but it sure looks like any one can train wihout a license.
you maybe able to go to the Pa. game commission website
www.pgc.state.pa.us

Capt ag

This maybe true in kill season, but I know what it says in the hunting and trapping digest on training dogs, I think that the key word is to say you are "TRAINING DOGS"--not coonhunting, donot think any justics will go against you if you show them what it says in the digest and you are not in kill season, but to be sure check with one of the 6 regional game commision offices. by the way I do have both a hunting and furtakers license as I am a resident of pa. also have a non resident license in NY state

You do NOT need a license to train dogs in Pa. You DO need a fur takers license to participate in the taking of fur bearing game. Doesn't matter who pulls the trigger if you have dogs in the hunt you are participating.

thanks everybody

if im able to go back this fall think i will just buy my fur takers license to be on the safe side cheaper than a hefty fine and maybe more

Posted by huntforlife on 03-05-2013 01:19 AM:

is there a rule on carrying a side arm while training dogs? i know you said no rifle, shot gun, or bow. But i cant find anything about side arm.

Posted by Fisher13 on 03-05-2013 02:02 AM:

From what I understand, if the season is in, you need one, out of season, your not hunting your training, so you don't need one.

Posted by Randy Tallon on 03-05-2013 03:47 AM:

A handgun may be carried in training season.

I do a lot of training here in PA. The way I have always understood it was if you are carrying any type of weapon other than a handgun for protection, you need a fur takers' license during season. All other times that you are training without a weapon, there is no need for a license. There is no training on state land on Sundays and during the youth pheasant season, however, you may train year round on privately owned land.

There is a nitch to the last sentence because in one part of the game laws it says something about training is permitted year round and in the pheasant section it is closed on Sundays and during the youth pheasant season. I am not sure if those laws only pertain to bird dogs or what, but there is definitely a discrepancy there...

In order to harvest fur bearer in PA you must obtain a PA Hunting license and Fur taker's license.

how much does the fur takers license cost for out of staters

Posted by Fisher13 on 03-05-2013 04:51 PM:

If you were carrying a handgun in a hip holster, during the off season, "for protection" would you need a concealed permit? Even though it is not concealed?

Posted by Randy Tallon on 03-05-2013 05:28 PM:

If the hip holster is concealed (covered by a jacket or shirt) you will need a concealed carry permit. You can also obtain a permit for huting purposes. The hunting related permits are issued by the county treasurers office.

We run on Sundays on state land all the timehave for years with no issues. I read it as it was legal to do so. Only time you cant is the youth Pheasant season.

Randy T.

in what other state can i carry.....i have CWP ... since 1964 our uncle was a U S Marshall

Posted by Randy Tallon on 03-06-2013 12:33 AM:

If you're looking to carry in multiple states I would get the Utah permit. Check with a local gun club to see who and where a local class is. I'm not sure if Pa carries any reciprocity with any other state as far as permits go...unless you fall under the federal law enforcement carry....thank you, George W. Bush.

Joe, you're a little off. On Sundays, you can only hunt on State Land (public) and on private land with the landowners permission.

I agree that it's a little strange that we can't run hounds on Game Lands during the youth pheasant season, but it's only like a week or 2 so I don't really worry about it, just don't hunt game lands during that time.
