Something UKC needs to do

I think UKC should start giving money away at hunts. Like when people sign up they pay an extra $10 and then how ever much there is put in then they split it between the winners

It's called a jackpot. I wish UKC would allow then. Adds to the fun and provides a great source of revenue to the club and the dogs. I know the whole gambling argument and it doesn't hold up

I agree. It atleast would help pay for gas and food etc... It adds up quick if you go every other weekend and hit a few big hunts a year... You're talking atleast $5000 in expenses alone... For a hobby.

Good idea and I think it should be taken into consideration!

The great thing about a jackpot is that for those who have objections to it, for whatever reason, they simply opt out. They don't buy in, they therefor are not supporting it, they have nothing to do with it and are in no way penalized for declining participation.
A calcutta is even more fun and brings in a whole nother group of participants that don't even need a dog to "have a dog in the hunt". I saw my first calcutta down at the DuPont club years ago. There were guys so old they had to be helped into the clubhouse and they were bidding dogs like their life depended on it.

The calcutta is pretty good. I've saw it done at poundage hunts and we do it pretty regular at our buddy hunts. I saw a Feller one night buy all but like 2 dogs. He got carried away. He won but it was only like 5 dollars lol.

In the calcutta, each dog is auctioned off individually. No, they aren't literally auctioned, the dogs chance at winning is auctioned. Anyone can bid.
Next up we got Spot, owned by Jesse Nappin. Spot is a GrNt, a flat out coon treeing machine and a regular winner all over the continental US of A. Ok, what's my bid? Anybody gib me 20?
I end up winning the bid on Spot at $40. The bids are totaled up, say, you got $400 in the pot. The club gets 30%, the dogs get the other 70%. The final 4 splits the pot which is $280 after the clubs share which would be $120. That's $70 for each final four dog. So since I won Spots bid and he got in the final four, I get $70, Jesse gets nothing because he didn't get his dog bought.
Believe me, almost no one is immune from this bidding. You should see how carried away some of those get. It's about twice as much fun as the hunt itself.

Jackpots, you just kick in, say, $10 or $20 per dog. You can get in or not, it is up to the person entering the dog. Total it up, same split for club and dogs. Everyone in the final four gets an even split IF they paid in. If, for instance, only one of the final four paid in, that dog would get it all.

Adjustments would have to be made for UKC's format but better minds than mine could easily figure that out.

i saw several dogs go for around $100 back in the mid-90s......like jim said also there was guys that would go that might not have even hunted but they were buying a dog or 2 in the auction, pop, cheeseburgers, etc. They would bring more people to the hunts for sure if they had them in ukc.

Posted by JiM on 03-03-2013 07:21 PM:

Yep, it's a win/win situation, really no downside and can really bring people into the clubhouse.

The breed associations handle rule changes, this one would require a policy change. UKC makes those.

Couple years ago, UKC went so far as to put into effect a new policy that banned poker games at the clubhouse during hunts. So, much as I'd love to see it, I'm not holding my breath for a jackpot or calcutta in UKC.
