China Beach, Vietnam
Me and another sailor operated the US Navy Post Office at China Beach from March 1969 to March 1970.
Just wondering if any of you coonhunters serving in I Corps during the war remember stopping in there to mail your letter or package back home. Or, remember us bringing you all mail to Marble Mt or Monkey Mt in our truck?

Hey Dude, I don't remember mailing anything there. But I do remember taking an IN-Country R&R there. I took one there and one in Vu.ng Tau, it's on the South China Sea also.
You probably visited the PX while you were at China Beach. It was the building on the left just after you came through the front gate. Standing at the front of the PX, our post Office was a quanset hut that sat between the PX and the USO building. Glad you made it home friend!!!!
My Seabee base camp was at Freedom Hill across from the 1st Marine base and a short distance from the Freedom Hill PX. That wasn't very far from China Beach and we used to go there on our days off. I tried to body surf there but was lucky I didn't drown. I will assume you are talking about the China Beach that was at Da Nang. And, I was there in the same time frame. Were you there when the ammo dump at the air base went up? It leveled our camp.

THANKS STEVE
THANKS STEVE, I was with The 199th Light Infantry Brigade. Our Main Base was in Bien Hoa. Our Forward Firebases were farther South.

My dad was a Seabee. He was in Mcb58. His name was Sam Bearden. He has friend in Iowa named Denny Sandvig. Did you happen to know theses guys? He was proud to be Seabee. He loved his friends that he was over there with too. I think they called him Pig. Being from Arkansas he got a tatoo of a Pig on his arm. It was supposed to be a razorback but turned out to be a pig! Prolly a shot in the dark but just wondered. Thanks.
No, there were several different Seabee battalions over there. I did spend plenty of time on Marine firebases around the Da Nang-Phu Bai area and spent time at a camp located at Phu Loc.
I do vaguely remember the USO building at China Beach but I don't remember the Post Office. I went to Taipai, China for R&R. I will never forget the time I spent there. LOL
Man, that has been over 40 years ago. Of course there are some bad things that happened I remember like it was yesterday.

I was there when the ammo dump blew up. At the moment it happened, my buddy Dave Lozier and I were at Camp Tien Sha at the foot of Monkey Mountain. The main US Navy Fleet Post Office that processed all mail to every American in I Corp as there and we went there twice a day to pick up mail for 1st Marine Div., Freedom Hill, the big US Navy Hospital, US Army units etc.
Chief Darling, E-8, walked past near area we were working just as the explosion hit. I can remember the look on his face, and his knees buckled as he thought we were all gonners from a direct hit. But, it was miles up the road.
After we got our load, we drove up by there. Fires still burning all over the place. It looked to me exactly what you see when a large tornado hits a town. Shreds and bits of pieces of everything lodged up in the trees. It was an awsome explosion.
I may post some pictures if I get around to it.
