We use 3/8" black plastic pipe splices. And we dont drive it all the way to the back of the hole. I'll try to find a picture and get on here.

It might not have any effect on the way it runs, but we leave a little in the back so you get more running out of the tap. I can't say I have any scientific proof of it working better one way or the other but thats just the way we do it.

Another piece of advice, when you cook it down,(if you're using an open fire to cook it down) put your finished product in a larger container and let it settle out. If you cook on an open fire you get some "goo" in the bottom. Doesn't bother it any, just looks better when it doesn't have a bunch of stuff settled in the bottom.

And you need a bunch of sap. About 40-50 gallons of sap will make a gallon of syrup.

We have a tank we keep on the four wheeler to dump the buckets into and just keep them on the tree all the time.

We have out 18 gallon buckets, 2 five gallon buckets and 2 55 gallon trash barrels.

The sooner you boil it the better. THe longer you wait the darker and stronger it will taste. If you keep it cold and in clean containers, you can keep it up to a couple weeks. I wouldn't keep it more than a week myself though.
