We have a large fenced in area where our dogs run loose alot of the time. Hunting is also a great way to condition although you do have a risk of injury. In nice weather we also run dogs with golf cart.

had a buddy who worked his on a treadmill. He hunted them also But that treadmill put the finishing touches in my opinion.
I'm thinking about running mine on a tread mill but I also hunt them as well

The only way to get the muscle a coondog should have is to hunt them and hunt them hard. A dog that has been roaded can be lean but does not show the muscle on top of muscle like they should. A dog that is swam tends to look real long in the body, because it builds the long muscles. The tread mill will take weight off but not build muscle. Hunting the dog is the only way to give them that pop like they should have in the rear and shoulders.

what is muscle on top of muscle? never heard that before. are you referring to 'bulk'? many supplements can do that as well in conjunction with working out.
when a dog is hunting, what are they doing? running. that's what they do on treadmills, walkers. swimming is still giving a workout and working muscle (look at Micheal Phelps).

personaly all i ever did was hunt them.........and making sure there excellent examples of the breed standerd/ sound conformation sure helps alot
as for the bull hockey hunting them is the ONLY way to get one to look like "a coonhound should", well its just that. bull hockey. almost every TOP showdog in at least the last 30yrs ive been around either NEVER got unsnapped or at the very least rarely.
swimming and roading seem to be the norm......and im sure treadmills todays
Really, Really hunt a dog night after nite and see what they look like. You can't fake it. Dogs aren't "running" when there hunting. The body has short muscles and long muscles. You can run on a treadmill all day and swim all day and take supplements. That will NOT give you muscle like a hunting dog has. Those are cardio exercises. That will cut weight and tone the body. Same as it does in people with the right diet. Hunting is like the total gym workout. Or circuit training. Were you exhaust each muscle group combined with a short recovery. Dogs are climbing, crawling, jumping, swimimg, running in short burst while going uphill down hill and standing up right on two legs while holding a tree tight with two legs and barking after there muscles are fatigued. Thus involving all muscles. As for the dogs winning the shows, that has nothing to do with the breed stanterds thats about who's in the judges click.(not always but most of the time) As for Phelps he is a train athlete that has a balanced workout, he dosen't just jump into a pool. I was a college athlete myself, that studied sports Med. I know a thing or two about how the body works.
Not to get in a p_ _sing match with ya birch run but you would really have to take into consideration the hunting terrain. Here in the flat farmland of michigan it isnt the same as the mountains of wva or the swamps of carolina. So give me a slightly inclined treadmill with some added weight and I could muscle up any dog along with the right nutrition. JMHO
I live in the flatest part of OH.

............or a dog who HUNTED harder

Notice every single muscle pop's.
i have forgotten how to post pics......but there are a few in old bloodlines.....and prob on here too
Protien supliment and Swimming a dog is the best way to build muscle mass. A good quality feed for the coat and run it to keep its ankles and feet strong.. Another thing a lot of people make the mistake of doing is putting too much muscle and not enough fat.. Feed it all it will eat while your conditioning it to cover the ribs, back bone, and hips. No judge likes to see a dog with bulging muscles when its hips and back bone are showing

Working a dog doesn't build muscle. Except for creatine, no supplement in the world will build muscle in and of itself. And creatine has its limits. Showing a dog is a relatively low impact endeavor and one could do plenty of aerobic activity with a proper diet and achieve success. A well constructed program of work similar to gaiting is really all you need. This would be the same type of "work" demonstrated during the show therefore should be what you work on and attempt to accenuate. And at the end of the day, unless you use steroids, you will only be able to get out of a dog what is in them genetically. All of the tough talk won't make a difference other than in an ego deprived mind.

Thats the problem, a dog that is being hunted is going to show there ribs. You should see muscle poping everywhere. That is a hunting dog. That is what they should look like on the bench since they are supose to be working dogs. And be able to run a track and tree a coon to meet breed standerd.
Creatine does not build muscle it allows the muscle to retaine water tear down and rebuild, gives you a faster recovery time. When you lift weights it gives your body a tone look because it fills all the fibers with water. If you do not work out while taking creatine you will look like the pillsbery doe boy.

Alot of Creatine supplements do not have enough creatine in the dose they tell you to use to be effective for muscle growth. You have to really read the lables and buy the better products to aid in muscle growth. I used creatine in college when Mark Mcguire was using it. That was when it was in it's purest form. It had major side effects at that time. Now it has been refined and not as pure as it once was 15 yrs ago. But the side effects are not near what they use to be. A few yrs ago I had a hard time finding a good creatine supplement. It's not a product that should be used unless you really know how to use it. Most people want to look good without putting the time and work into it. Same as with the show dogs. Pump them up with suplements, put them on a tread mill and call it good. Then drug them up before they go in the show ring so they stand still and look pretty.
Thankfully the creatine that I started with and use to this day wasn't the generic crap, atleast I hope. That is probably why I have to cut the dogs recommended dose in half? I'll keep telling myself that anyway, it works. Like the dork I am, I actually visited the place where the supplement is made and had the chance to walk through the ingredient storage area to verify ingredients and their sources. I was impressed as helll and thats why I have no problem paying $100 for a 3 month supply of it. You get what you pay for.
