It's no Picnic. Looks like I'm about to get added to that stat. At least that's what the insurance company that is paying me now says. They and their lawyers are going to try to get me on SSI. I broke 3 of my Vertebrae in my lower back when I was 18. Now at 49 I have severe/ acute/ chronic degenerative arthiritis in my lower back. Doctors say an operation isn't a good option. I'm slowly getting worse. Hunted off an ATV this past season as much as possible. Long walks cause intense leg pain and slightly paralize me. Sleeping! Try waking up at night to leg cramps and radiating pain through your legs. It sucks. Not supposed to lift over 30 lbs or do alot a repetative bending. I go to hard one day and pay for 2-3 days, untill the swelling and pain subside.I haven't tried to run a nt hunt since November of 2011. Might not ever run another one. Medication helps some but isn't a cure. I'm sure there are some that are on SSI that are milking the system. There are also some that should be there that aren't!! Doctors said that most people in my shape would have given up several years ago.

Most liberals are off in the head so much. Id say they are on it. I don't mind paying for somebody that truly needs it. It's those other 7,000,000 that chaps me.

Take a look at where Disability rates are highest:
from SSA data found at: http://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v57n1/v57n1p25.pdf
County concentrations showing regional disability prevalence rates for the Dl population are presented in
charts l-3. Areas with the highest over- all prevalence rate included: Appalachia (parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Ken- tucky, and Tennessee), counties scattered throughout the Southeast Coastal Plains (parts of North and South Caro- lina), and areas of the Midsouth, (including Arkansas, Mississippi, the“Boot Heel” of southeastern Missouri,
and counties in southeastern Oklahoma). In the West, areas of high Dl prevalence were located in northwestern Montana, the coastal counties of Washington, and in isolated counties of the Southwest, primarily in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado.
Seems like lots of the DI population lives in pretty red areas. Not much of it around me.
Wonder why so much Disability in Appalachia?

seems strange......but at a glance it looks like the highest and most consentrated part of the country are also some of the poorest in the nation.........
If you haven't figured it out yet, rates are high in areas of mining and timber operations.
OP, do you think folks who put years on doing hard labor deserve to receive Disability when they get injured?
As you can tell we don't have much anyone on dole for DI up in my area. But seems to me that if a fella wants to work in these dangerous industries so that we can have cheap heat and electricity and cheap paper products the least we could do is take care of 'em. It's really just a "redistribution of wealth" scheme taking money out of the city and putting it in the hands of rural folk.

quote:blackflagginit, I was typing my last post as you were posting yours. My "if you haven't figured it out yet" was not directed at you. But yes, it appears that DI is used heavily in poor regions- if you read the article, in particular, areas that have chronic high unemployment. My guess is that there are many that would prefer to work while in pain that just have to accept reality and go on disability when times get tough and there are no jobs.

Think about this also
quote:In areas where there are no jobs the real estate values are lower, rent is usually cheaper, cost of groceries, gas and everything else a little lower. When the cost of living is cheaper where are those on FIXED income going to go? Where it is cheapest to live most likely. Poverty breeds itself and we can't get goverment to figure out why!

truly, you would have us to believe that 10 - 27% of the populations in those purple counties worked in mining and timber ind. i'm from the deep south timber country and the number there is more in the 1-2% range. the west virginia/ kentucky mining areas may be in the 10% range, but that would mean that everyone that worked in a mine became disabled. i believe you will have to dig a little deeper to find your common denominator.

Rest of the story.
The medical doctors put me on work restrictions so I wouldn't get seriously injured. The place I worked realized I had taken out a long term disability policy through them. I was working at a die casting facility running CNC diecasting machines called Techmire. I finally figured out they might have kicked me to the curb. My medical cost and work limitations were going to cost the company more than it was worth to keep me. I even volunteered to take a lesser job pay and work load to stay. No dice. Realizing I'm not going to get better and slowly getting worse. It is pretty much the story. I can't drive or ride very far in a vehicle my legs start cramping up I need to be able to get out and stand erect about 15 minutes every 2 hours of setting. Standing and walking 2 hours or more than a mile need to set or lay down for a while to get to where I can move again. It just sucks. Probably won't be hound hunting much in 5+ years. 10 years probably be in a wheel chair own a scooter or be on crutches.

Re: Rest of the story.
quote:Robert, thanks for your story and for putting a human face on this issue. I responded with the data and graphs that I did because with so many of these issues folks always think it is someone else, somewhere else, and that they are on disability just to "game" the system. If you look at the colored map above, much of the coon hunting community falls in the high DI use areas. SOme falls in the middle zone, and less falls in the low use zone. I live in a big pocket of very low use, and do not begrudge anyone who fairly deserves a helping hand. If I hear you been out coonhunting the night after cashing your DI check, it won't be me complaining. You put your body on the line for your job then you deserve the benefits. Enjoy your health while you have it.

There is so much fraud in the system we need to just do away with all of it. Sorry for the ones who really deserve it but oh well. You will have the cheats and liars to thank for your check getting cut off. How do we really know you deserve it? Of all the poeople I know on it, only one of them in my opinion deserved it, he is dead now!
My dad says they did not have this when he was growing up and nobody starved to death.
Why dont we, the working people, just band together and quit going to work every day until something changes?
quote:if you get disabled before you reach retirement age do you think you derserve to get disabilty id be willin to bet you would cry like a baby if they said you didnt qulify now ssi thats where they need to really check because those people are the 1s that either never worked or get it before they earn enough creidts but i worked all my life so i know i derserve it

I know of NO situation in which you can collect SSI unless you have paid in to it.

quote:Are you suggesting that up in Appalachia where DI rates are as high as 27% that they are a bunch of cheats and "ner do wells"? And that in urban cores, such as where I live that we just are more honest? I mean where I live the rate is under 3%!

disability isnt going to make anyone rich :/......and it seems likely that those who are on it might migrate to an area where the cost of living is lower or lowest....here they get more bang for there limited buck so to speak
