I always hunt a pregnant female. I would not fool with a pup if the mother was not hunted while pregnant. Much higher odds of the dog being a natural.
I had a gyp 15 years ago, bred her and kept hunting her. I have a picture of her getting a win down in Texas at the 4 states Cystic Fibrosis hunt. She was as big as a house. 5 of 10 pups made titled dogs, and all of the others hunted. She was bred again many times. She never reproduced at such a high rate but she was never hunted hard during pregnancy after that.
Almost every dog that I have had that was a NATURAL came from a cross made when the mother was being hunted.

For the very curious- read up on epigenetics.

it does seem that way about the pups being natural. im not a big fan of brood gyps i havent seen eny dog worth its salt come out of a brood gyp but have seen them come out of a pr female that was just pleasure hunted but never put in a hunt.

we hunted one just last week, 9 days later she had pups. thought about hunting her in a hunt 2 days before she had them, she was raring to go and none of cast had over 1 coon seen.
wish we had'a.
got some 8 mth olds treeing coons right now of one cross.
i rather breed a brood male to a good female, if i was gonna breed that way.

i hunted mine till the last 2 weeks my brouther said he hunted with a guy that had a female breed hunted all night they put her in the truck and when they pulled her out of the box when they got home she had pups in the dog box

I don't hunt a bred female anymore. The last time I did I had three pups with cerebrial damage and could not walk. Vet at UT asked if the female had been hunted, he said at the fifth week when the brain was developing that the pups were susceptable to parvo, the mothers immunity was no help to the unborn pups. I had never heard of this before, after a little research I found that he was correct. Always thought I was doing a good thing giving her exercise.

i had a vet tell me my treeing feist had two weeks to live five years later he is still going strong! haha it could happen though but if the pups die it was ment for them to die nothing can stop God and his work.

How would hunting a female why she's pregnant have anything to do with how the pups start?? Haha I got a kick out of that one, thats one of the best ive heard on here. The genetics are there already. Trust me there eyes and ears arent open while they are in there. They aren't taking any pointers from mama!

I would be more concerned about losing the bred female due to a freak hunting accident, coyote attack, hit by car, whatever. What a waste of a good dog & who knows how many future Nite Champions - not to mention, the money spent on the stud service !!

Just food for thought...

Qualified ours for the world while she was pregnant....actually had a rqe cast win but 11th place the weekend prior..the.next weekend got her qualified...cant remember if we got anymore wins after that..hunted her upto a few weeks prior..once she started blowing up and slowing down i put her up....

The 2 pups we kept turn 2 in April and are doing a great job...one needs 2 wins to grand...the other only been in 2 hunts and has a 3rd...dont know if hunting em pregnant helps but ive heard it does.....

Nothing wrong with hunting a bred female, the exercise is good for them and a female in good shape will deliver easier, BUT in this day and age its hard to believe anyone actually thinks it will have an effect on how the pups hunt.

I've always hunted pregnant females. It's a risk but I believe the exercise does em good. Don't have any proof but I think it's good for the pups too. I hunt em up until they get too big and seem uncomfortable. Just always be a little picky about the terrain ya turn her loose in.

when i was a kid i went to a beagle field trial and watched a guy walk behind his dog while she was running a rabbit, and was picking pups up off the ground behind her. she won the trial that day while whelping pups. true story!!
