New WV State Record Yellow Perch

1/3/2013
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The new state weight record for yellow perch now belongs to Joshua Wayne Estes of Hurricane, W.Va., according to Frank Jezioro, Director of the Division of Natural Resources. Estes caught the 14.5-inch, 1.93-pound fish at Summersville Lake in Nicholas County on December 1, 2012, using a live chub for bait.

His catch establishes a new West Virginia record for weight. The previous weight record for yellow perch was 1.83 pounds, caught by Charles Mayle from Tygart Lake in Taylor County in 1985. The length record for yellow perch of 15.44 inches still stands and was caught by Craig Hollandsworth from Summersville Lake in 2010.

Anglers who believe that they have caught a state record fish should check the record listing in the current West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Fishing Regulations brochure. The brochure also outlines the procedure to follow for reporting a state record catch. This information is also available online at www.wvdnr.gov.

The yellow perch (Perca flavescens) is a species of perch found in the United States and Canada, where it is often referred to by the shortform perch. Yellow perch look similar to the European perch, but are paler and more yellowish, with less red in the fins. They have six to eight dark, vertical bars on their sides. The yellow perch is in the same family as the walleye and sauger, but in a different family from the white perch. Yellow perch size can vary greatly between bodies of water, but adults are usually 4 - 10 in (10-25.5 cm) in length. The perch can live for up to 11 years, and older perch are often much larger than average; the maximum recorded length is 21.0 in (53.3 cm) and the largest recorded weight is 4.3 lb (2.0 kg).[1] Large yellow perch are often called "jumbo perch" or "jack perch".

I love to eat bluegills but yellow perch are even better. Walleye, then Yellow Perch, then Bluegills for me. But what really surprises me is 14.5 " is the state record? I've caught 15.5" up north and the same lake coughs up a 17" or two every summer? How can our yellow perch get bigger with a shorter growing season? Different strain?

Yellow perch

They get purty big around here too.And YES----they are darn good to eat. This time of year is good time to catch 'em too.Any of the rivers or tributaries that empty into the Albemarle Sound in N.C. is good places to catch 'em.At least around here.

Posted by JustinH23 on 02-04-2013 01:16 PM:

There is a diner down the road that has them every now and then, I don't go away miserable for no reason at all! lol, I think they thrive in cooler water, if I'm not mistaken. Thats why they grow bigger the farther north you get. Kinda like Muskies and Northerns. We've got a few around here but never get any size on them.
