What is a Bad Night??

What do you all consider a bad night to hunt during the winter months? Which I know temp varies everywhere but what do most consider a bad night to hunt?

Posted by mauser06 on 01-25-2013 02:52 AM:

deep and/or crusty icy snow...

temps much below 30 or so is my temp cut off...except from here on out..if im real bored and its a little colder i might go just because the boars are lookin for love...

these days, it means i get to hunt about every other week on average...hunted last week..didnt get to hunt this week...next week looks like i will be back at it...next weekend looks back to cold...

belly up, your right on!!

i COULD turn the dog out right now....and he'd stand a fair chance of finding a track....but i'd freeze waiting around and likely have a longggggggg walk to get to him...not my idea of fun! if i wanna stand around waiting in the cold i will go deer huntin...and i rather walk to 4 or 5 trees close by in 2 hours than walk to 1 or 2 trees a long ways away in the same time frame...

Bad night to hunt is about the 2nd day of a storm. By storm I mean a nasty cold snap or a very heavy snow.

People accuse me of being color blind. The truth is I will hunt red ones, blue ones, black and white ones, yellow ones, black and tan ones, or even brindle ones; Just as long as they are English!

One night earlier this winter, I thought the weather was bad. I guess I was pretty jumpy and pacing around the house. My wife say's "you are going to drive me nuts!" "Just go hunting!"

Hey, I try hard to make my wife happy. So, I went hunting. It wasn't the best night, but we did manage to tree a couple.

First couple nights after a frigid dip in temperature or a sizable snow. I do avoid hunting if the snow has a hard crust, but that is just for the dog's sake.

I don't know about the definition of a "bad night" but as told to me by a now deceased coonhunter that was 85 at the time....the definition of a good night of hunting is by the amount of dogs you take hunting...and the amount of dogs you take home!!! I've tried to adhere to that. Some nights are just better than others.

x2, bad night is when you lose one to the highway, or other. bringing all back safely is a good night.
