Are infrared cameras legal in competition?

Central Alabama here. Lots of our trees never lose their foliage. I had to use an infrared camera @ work today and saw a squirrel up an oak. I flipped the cam on it and sure enough it was glowing compared to everything else. So I got to wondering if it would be legal to use one to check a tree with in a nite hunt. It would be a huge benefit for finding them fast and move on to the next one. I was just wondering what the UKC and fellow hunters thought of this.

the use ofelectronic equipment is against the rules I think

Unless they have changed the rule I think that all your allowed to use to find a coon is a light.

Cool. I thought it would be against some rule but you never know. I know you have to be able to see the coon but using IR would tell you where to look. I don't think they should be legal but it looks like those garmin thingies will be soon so you never know.

well lets see..... plus a coon or possibly a whipperwill and get on fast to the next drop... then would you then minus them just as fast if you found nothing and get on to the next drop? these cameras pick up a heat signature , aka your glow.... new can of worms looks to me like !

Infrared cameras

They would not be legal now ,, nor will they be untill ever cast in a hunt has one to find the coons. How would you like to tree 3 times in a hunt and get all circle points because they were in trees from hell, and another cast found all theirs in almost the same condidion because they had an Infrared camer. That would not be fair competition. What if all cast had IR Camers and one or more malfunctioned?? What if the person operating the camera had not scored his dog on that strike and tree. He could not report finding the coon to keep everyone else down. It goes on and on.
Nope no IR cameras till every hunter has one.. Then maybe...

I agree. Remember I am not a proponent of using IR or any technology like this due to it taking away from the dogs and the hunter and giving an unfair advantage to the man who can afford one of these little units (they are quite pricey). The scenario would be that a hunter would use it to scan the tree, spot the hot spots, then use a light to get an actual visual on the coon going from circle to plus points. I feel that it creates an unfair advantage not just in your cast but in the entire hunt. I put it up for discussion here in the UKC forum to give them a heads up that it is something they needed to look into before problems actually arose. I'm willing to bet that I'm not the first person to think about using one of these in this manner.

Camera or not to many trees are circled anyways. It would be interesting to see. ALOT of minus and alot of hurt feelings because some hunters don't believe their hound ever misses and when they don't see a coon it has to be a den or the coon is hiding behind that one leaf.

I agree WildH20. I'm going to look into it for my own use. Wouldn't it be nice to find that coon your young dog just treed all by it's self. I don't take many coons but it's a good feeling to walk away from the tree and know for sure your dog or dogs did the job. I've had my share of leaving a tree with out seeing the coon and haveing to fall back on the thought of the dog ran a good track treed it solid and sure ,, so it must have been there some where. But for competition hunting, it's not going to happen untill there is a system in place to put everyone on a level playing field.



Now what about an X-Ray vision camera or scope? Where you could look inside a hollow tree from top to bottom. Id' go for that. That technology all ready exist. Just go through Atlanta airport and get ya a big old body scan. IT'S HERE !!!
Dan thats a very intresting point.. If it were to come to pass would the IR camera also change circled points to minus points???
Would average Plus Points go up or down with IR camers??

Have you priced on of those FLIR's? not sure I would be taking one to the woods.

ukc will lose money.......
slick handlers with "tree dogs" that live off circle will stay home.

for years 2 hex nuts tied on each end of a foot or so of string and reflective tape around the nuts, were an .....alternative option..to accual live raccons treed

Ive seen it work even when UKC reps were on the cast :/
