-- killing tapeworms? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928295727)
killing tapeworms?
I recently wormed my dog with zimectrin gold ended up giving him the while tube over three days. How long will it take for him to start filling back out? He has started to clean back up can't find any worms in his stool. It seamed like it might be working but had me worried cause I didn't mean to give it like that but the plunger didn't hold to the right amount. I am going to my vet on Saturday to pick up som comfortis which I have never used and might get some tape worm pills and have on hand
Also would you guys recommend comfortis pills for fleas I have tried a lot of topicals this last spring and nothing seamed to work it was the worst I had ever seen them

I am very surprised your dog is still a live. Zemectrin gold can kill dogs. The dog was way overdosed. Are you trying to get rid of the dog or the worms?

i have read on other sites where some give them a tube some give partial just depends all who you talk to. either way it is hard to determine dosage being that it is intended for horses. i never noticed any ill effects from my dog i hunted him during those days. but i do believe i will just get the pills from my vet from now on.in my original post i said that i was worried cause i didnt mean to give him that big of a dose on the first day the plunge that i had set pushed right through i should have put it on my finger i guess. i wasnt trying to "get rid of my dog"

I admit that and like I said I am going to the pills but my original question was how long it takes to kill tape worm from the first dose

Also comparing horse weight and dog weights are two different they each require different doses per pound I didn't post in here to be ridiculed I just wanted to know about tape worms

I got this off of another site
"BE VERY CAREFUL when using horse and cattle drugs, horses tend to have a VERY long intestinal tract and they don’t normally need high doses of drugs to be effective for them, whereas a dog, they are in & out so to speak. Drugs like safeguard paste (panacur) for horses is virtually ineffective for a dog because you need to give ten times the horse dose to a dog to get the desired effect. Not to mention the tapes it gets are not the ones that dogs tend to get"

Safe Gaurd / Zymectrin not the same.
My experiance. Safegaurd is safe for dogs, zymectrin is not. I used zymectrin 20 years ago like many others did then. I had a dog that would get sick and go off his feed every 2 or 3 months ( requiring antibiotics) and also just get crazy sometimes when hunting. Like he was loosing his mind. Find him miles away just doing nothing but running with his head up not hunting. Long story short. I stopped using Zymectrin and the dog returned to normal. Note: I was only giving a dose for a 75- 100 lbs horse. This was a big dog that weighed 85-95 lbs.
I have used cattle and swine injectable ivomec ever since, squirt .25cc on a piece of bred every month and feed to the dog. No heartworms yet. I use safegaurd as needed for all other worms. I'm not sure safegaurd gets all worms, but it has worked for me.

To answer your original inquiry about comfortis. I did same as you. I used topicals and then last couple years they seemed to be less effective. I switched to comfortis and it works great.
If you only have a couple dogs, Droncit was excellent for tapeworms. I got it at my vets. But I will admit I have used zimectrin gold also with good results. just trying to be helpful. Good luck with your dogs.

The comfortis for fleas is awsume. I had a dog that was covered, thousands all over him, gave pill within 48 hours not a single flea could be found. One pill cost me 17 dollars but worth it.

Thanks for the replies I know you say that comfortis keeps the fleas off of the dog but how do you control them around the kennel last year in and around my a live ground kennel fleas were on the ground I used a lot of yard chemicals to no effect how should I kill them in the yard after I treat dogs. I was miserable trying to keep them outside I never did get them in the house though but it was a pain

Panacur Or Safe Guard !!!!! for Tapes
Panacur and Safe Gaurd are the same wormers just different brands. They are both FENBENDAZOLE !!!! AND BOTH KILL TAPES AND ROUNDS. Both are broad spectrum wormers and very safe. Round worm are better cured with a PYRANTEL PAMOATE like Nemex 2 or Anthelban V. It kills round worms much faster. DO not use ZIMECTRIN or horse paste wormers it isn't worth the risk. Dogs do not absorb the minute dosage properly to be effective and create the possibility for overdose or underdone. 1 cc per 5 pounds is the recommended dosage for Panacur or Safe Guard. You can buy either at Tractor supply or most farm and feed stores.

Panacur will not kill the tapes he is trying to get and it does not take the same dosage for a horse as it does a dog. He did not over dose the dog that much depending on the weight of the dog. 1 tube of Zimectrin Gold will worm about 120 lbs of dog. Only problem is the Ivomec in it. It gives a high dose of ivomec.

Zimectrin
Its the overdose of ivomec that could creat the problems too much is hard on the liver. Panacur treatment for 5 days will kill most cases of tapes it is to mild for severe cases. Dronset knock them right out.
