AI at home?

ive been wanting to breed my female to a good stud, but the 2 i want are way to far for me to drive. so i wanted to do with shipped seman. i called a fairly local vet and they want big money to do it. im not breeding to make any money, im doing it for a pup. my question is how affective would it be if i did it myself? ive seen dogs lock just once and have a good litter of pup.

Ain't that big of a deal with chilled semen... Frozen is a whole different thing

Even with Chilled Semen you may have to Centrifuge it concentrate it to a Breeding unit .. Chilled Semen is usualy Extended to about 84 mil per ml and you want it to be around 250 million per ml.

And the best Highest percentage Catheter to use is this one ... This is the only thing I use .. http://www.minitube.com/s_sub_produ...=124&p_id=4

Frozen is just that....frozen. It must be thawed and checked for sperm count.

It has to be implanted into your female. Its not something you'd do st home with no knowledge or equipment.

We ship chilled and have had AI success. Just do your homework. You might find the investment of a vet is the best way to go.

It says that ones for small to medium sized dogs? What is the price? It doesn't say.thank you

How bout AI at home with fresh semen? Any advise on that? Not a fan of breeding a young male naturally would be nice if I wanna breed one to a female to have some knowledge about it

I drew semen off Brummy into a condom, sucked it out with a syringe with 5 inches of fish tank filter hose on it, put about 4 1/2 inches of the hose into the bitch, slowly deposited it into her then held her hind end up for 10 minutes while gently massaging her vulva. 61 days later she had 8 pups. I did it just to see if it would work, I had bred her naturally a year previous and she had 7 puppies.

Thanks Clyde,i seen it done once the male tuned up sterial and female didnt take anyway just lookin for some ideas,I Sopose you had to make a special trip for Brummy to get magnums

There's a big difference between Fresh semen AI when you have both dog present ( About Any "Equipment" will work )... Chilled Semen has had a " Extender " Added to it .. The Extender is made up of Proteins, thickeners and Some have Antibiotics added,, The object of the Extender is to suspend the Sperms Movement, Feed it and protect it from any bacteria that was picked up during the Collection..

The Mavic 250 catheter or the 400 for med to large dogs cost around $45 .. You will have to contact a sales person at Minitube they do not post there prices .. There very fast about getting back to you by Email ..

If you take care of the catheter wash well with Antibacterial soap, rinse and dry it well, it will last thru 4-5 breedings easy.

Find someone in your area who raises English Bulldogs. All (or most) of them have to be AI'ed so the guys who raise them generally do it themselves. I know dad has taken his B&T male a couple times to a bulldog breeder near him and he does a good job. He will collect, check the sperm count, and AI the female for him all at once and not charge him anything for it. Of course you may have to pay a guy to do it but surely it's cheaper than a vet.

He collected way too much Prostate Fluid !! Those two hounds would only produce about 3-4 ml of good rich sperm total ....
I have told him and told him to only collect the sperm rich fraction !! Most dog ejackulate in 3 Fractions

Prostate Fluid Then Sperm the more Prostate Fluid ..

I have alot of male that the First is all Sperm then prostate fluid .. These males I can collect in 30 seconds .. You only want a nice white color any off white or simi clear is just Prostate Fluid and is actualy corrosive over time to the Sperm .. This is why we Centrifuge the collection to remove most all the prostate fluid ..

Mixing 2 Sires can really speed up a Breeding program .. And I have mixed afew of my males ... When the pups start showing their Abilitys and look really good Then I will DNA those pups ... at 6-8 months old some start to shine then I want to "WHOs Your Daddy" !! lol

OK I did a sperm count on that collection and I had to Delute it by 20 times to get a good count . The total count was 855,000,000 sperm per ml .. I devided the collection in half and I'l freeze 1/2 in Freeze Extender and do a Chilled semen test on the other half in a Chilled semen Extender ..

I had exactly 2 ml total .. To ensure a long lasting Chilled extention I need to add 8.75 ml of Chilled semen Extender to get down to about 100,000,000 per ml and I'l use this product http://www.exodusbreeders.com/Produ...01-1135024264..

Extender and Sperm Temp Temp Temp !!!! Both the Semen and the Extender are the exact same temp !!! I uses a Test Tube Incubator to get it right at 80^ for both .. Then their mixed

I have AI'd dogs for many years. Both my own and a Bulldog breeder local here. I have very good success with collecting and inserting fresh semen, but have never worked with fresh chilled or frozen. I have collected from as small as Dachshunds to Bloodhounds. Success with both. Vets are charging outragous prices from a very simple procedor. I use a dixie cup, a rigid tube and a 20 cc syringe.

The biggest thing to remember is you need to time your female! Without you are just guessing so if you miss you don't know where the problem was, the dog, the bitch or you. Timing is everything. Frozen semen is a whole different ball game and you absolutely MUST time your bitch. I know people don't like paying for progesterone tests but it IS worth it!
