When He/She goes to chewing tie them back and shoot the coon out to the other dog(s) or shoot the coon out to the ground. When after treeing a few coons but not getting the reward of having the coon they will stop if they have a brain.

I won't let my hound chew at the tree. The stuff is getting more and more expensive, so if she wants to chew she can buy her own and stay out of my can. Seriously though I am not sure of a good way to break bad treeing habits. It seems that they are probably the hardest because you don't want to be too aggressive with a hound under a tree with a coon in it. My hound jacks the hell out of a tree when she is in company and will climb given the opportunity every time.

One good thing about one that chews is they will stay parked until you get there.

They don't chew as bad when their gums are sore.

A few years ago when my hound was younger he would chew real bad. I got me some spray from tractor supply that they used for horses called "No Chew" I would spray the tree down in the general area he was chewing and he sure didn't like the taste of the spray. After a few trees he started chewing less and less. Wasn't completely broken but didn't chew near as much. But, I would have to occasionally repeat this method if he hadn't been hunted in a while. It worked good for me. Good Luck,

Cutting teeth

I know of 2 different people that tried this and
IT DIDN'T HELP, they would still shut up and chew.
One of these dogs nearly died one night when
he was attacked by coyotes, tore him up bad. He was a great big dog, but with out the fang teeth those yotes had fun tearing him up.
Low level shock therapy works the best I hear.

CHEWING

DOG COULD BE OUT SHAPE EAR MITES OR HERITARY IF ITS HERITARY YOU CANT STOP THE CHEWING SOME STRAINS OF HOUNDS DO THAT

Posted by brushrunretiree on 01-28-2013 12:03 AM:

IF YOU GET YOUR HOUND ACCUSTOMED TO HAVING AN E-COLLAR ON, THEN ACCUSTOM HIM TO THE FEEL WHEN HE DOES WRONG, YOU CAN STOP HIM FROM CHEWING UNLESS HE GETS CLEAR OUT OF HEARING. DON'T USE ANY LEVEL ANY HIGHER THAN NECCESARY. I HAD A DOG THE ONLY PLACE I COULD CATCH HIM WAS AT THE TREE, IF YOU SHOT THE COON OUT. I ASKED A OLD TIMER ONE DAY, HOW DO I TRAIN MY DOG TO LET ME CATCH HIM. HE SAID, DO YOU KNOW ANYWHERE FENCED IN? AFTER YOU GET USED TO WEARING THE DUMMY, SWITCH COLLARS AND TAKE HIM WHERE HE CAN'T GET AWAY FROM YOU, AND CALL HIM, IF HE IGNORES YOU, HIT HIM. IF HE PAYS NO ATTENTION, HIT ON A HIGHER NUMBER, YOU'LL GET HIS ATTENTION. THEN HUNT HIM WITH THE COLLAR ON. I SAID, I'M AFRAID I'LL RUIN HIM, SHOCKING HIM AT THE TREE?. HE SAID, WHAT DO YOU HAVE NOW?

In my experence, there is always a way to break habits you dont care for...those learned are easier then those inherited....but in the end a smart trainer can figure out a way to mold there hound into what they want. Of course a smart hound helps there too as they learn quicker

Ive also learned the quickest way to break a "bad" habit, is to replace it with one easier to live with....rechannel the urge to another area so to speak.

That being said, the phenom we group into the "stayput" title has a few glitches..these dogs seem to have tunel vision and that focus (along with self confidence and sometimes hard hearing believe it or not) is what keeps them at the tree when the rest of the pack is off chasing butterflys or whatever there doing atm.

Its not natural for a pack animal, and yes coondogs like all canines are pack animals, to do its own thing all the while ignoring there "packmates".....that causes the chewers, tree jackers, and in some cases agressive tree dogs......you could say there sociopaths in a way, and that causes those nervous ticks :/.....that being said, its the side effect we breed for because they STAYPUT (most do anyway)

so were stuck with those bad habits, there what reproduce (or at the very least tied to our "stayput genotype") and we just have to refocus the energy somehow....

I have the same problem but I am just training with a coon tail. I think she learnt her lesson when she got a stick caught in the roof of her mouth and begin to gag.

i aint never seen one broke from it, ive seen some not chew as bad as they get older but still chewed.i knew a guy that had a dog chewed real bad, sometimes you couldnt find him,so he took him to the vet to have the dogs teeth pulled out,the dog went from chewing to gumming the tree. chewing is bred in a dog. its like trying to teach a dog to tree,if they aint bred to tree you aint going to teach them.

Posted by slobbermouth21 on 01-28-2013 07:22 AM:

i know if the dog chews and jacks the tree you take a chance on him stabben himself. i hunt with a dog from time to time that chews on wood but he will only do it if it touches him he will have a area cleared out around him when we get there nice dog ive hardly ever seen him slick or on a den but he will clear him a zone of freedom while at that tree.

Chewing does NOT mean you have an aggressive dog at all. I had a Duel Champion that treed great with other dogs and chewed at times and I do believe it was because he wanted the Coon but the dog never showed aggression to other dogs EVER! I have had people tell me to put hot sauce on a tree and all kind of stuff but fact is is if you have a chewer, you have a chewer. If it is an aggressive dog that chews, he stays in the woods for good... RIP...JMO

Still hunting dog Sometimes hes heck of tree dod Sometimes he chews a little to long I know hes stay put tree dog I dont hate the chewing looking for ideas to slow chewing down I have seen the chewing depends on how many sapplings are around , grape vines and the track. A cold track he chews more it seems Just want to chewing slowed down perferably without cutting or breaking teeth etc

had a guy who hunted with us once in awhile who had a b&t who dug at the base of the tree lol....he could dig a hole to china if it took too long to get there :/....he had a brother who would bite his handler if he didnt make himself known first (not to be mean but was just in a zone and didnt realize)

facts are its just a quirk......all of them are variances of the same quirk.....some just express it in different ways....chewing, jacking, digging, face barking, and in some cases agression.....not that agression cant have other reasons mind you.

its that zone that makes them the stayput (most with these quirks are pretty much stayput).....they just dont realise anything else is going on and the quirk is a psyical expression.........think nervious tick
