how long do you think it will be
before UKC is forced to combine all 6 coonhound breeds
( I refuse to consider those curs hounds no matter what catagory there listed in now)
over the last 30 odd years the demand for pups has crumbled to a tiny percent of what it was back then..there are fewer and fewer dogs every year who are accualy perm reg....i dont meen puppy papers, i mean accualy transfered into someones name and REGISTERED.
this trend isnt going away and is only going to get worse......just how long before Walkers, Blueticks, English, Plotts, B&Ts, Redbones are all tossed back into 1 breed and just called coondogs ???????
That will never happen.JMO
I can't see that happening. A lot of breed specific people out there that are proud of the breed they hunt.
a graph of how the numbers are changing would be very interesting. i've noticed fewer and fewer deer hunters each year.

deer hunting is major business in Georgia too Cody. I never thought i'd say, but if every deer in GA would move to Fla., S.C., Ala, Tenn., and N.C., our state would be a much better place. People wouldn't be crazy as a bed bug from sept-Jan. Thank the Lord it ended yesterday. Now maybe we can return to normal.

jmo..........but with less and less pups registered every year, i see a day when the kc's just drop the breed status and make 1 combined breed from the 6.
i can remember the days when you could set down papers of english, bluetick, or walkers, and there were the same dogs on all 3 papers. litters were split up into the 3 different breeds depending on the color they were born....this was in the 70s (breeds split in late 40s early 50s)...and it was common even then for say a bluetick born to walker parents to be moved to the "correct" breed.
b&t, redbones, and "high tans" were all considered the same breed to the hunters i grew up with...........and my great grandfather raised and sold the new "blueticks" all over the US. raised in his backyard in Appleton city mo...circa 1950s-60s. blueticks were bought and used with 0 regard to the color of anything in there pedigree. only the color of there own hide mattered.
in those days hounds sold as fast as they could be born and weaned.........and lots of people made a living buying hounds around the ozarks and shipping them nation wide.
there just isnt a demand for coondogs anymore, outside a very small comp sub culture. sooner or later the kc's, agian imo, will find it cheaper to have just 1 breed instead of 6 tiny ones.
face it coonhunting has all but died in the last 20years and it will be a wonder if it makes it 20 more. the days of splitting breeds is over, and the days of consolidation are coming imo.
Where are you from? Cause around here its hard to hunt and not hear a hound in the distance somewhere. Then the first couple weeks of kill season you can't seem to not pass a woods with a truck and dog box. There seems to be plenty of younger guys including myself around that love to coonhunt and keeping it alive. There are a few guys around here that I know for a fact was them and 4 kids under 10 hunting tonight. They take there buddies from school its "cool"

WALKER UNTIL THE DAY I DIE. ALMOST 25 YEARS NOW!!! don't knock any breed just feels right leading a walker .
What difference does it make if they recognize 1 breed or 20 breeds of coon dogs?? In the end the same number will be registered??
Hunting is on the decline here on PA...i remember when i was 12and 13...opening day of rifle season all the.news channels talked about over a million hunters hitting the woods....now, not 15 years later were at 600,000-750,000 off the top of my head...
Used to be numerous coon hunters right local....now, just me and a buddy and1 other guy in the same area...
Dont really see how combining breeds would change anything for.anyone....
And many of us care too much.about the breed to "muddy the waters". Atleast i know i wouldnt wanna see it....
If you dont care about breeds you probably.dont care about papers and registration now..

dont think you will ever see this happen thats why they started a breed stantard i wouldnt want a dog thats a mixed hound and the papers just say its a reg dog jmo i want the papers to say its a reg redbone or what ever breed its supposed to as far as the cur breed i see nothing wrong with them
Walkers and English keep dominating. They might as well only recognize 2. Rest might as well be with them curs.

Where are the numbers comming from. It was said that there are not as many dogs being registered, just wandering where I could find that info.
In my opinion a lot of "hobbies" have decreased with the economy and I'm sure it will be on the rise again. And I can't imagine combing all the breeds together that wouldn't make any since
Like JJ said, plenty of young guys like us hunting, plenty of hounds around, and plenty of younger kids and there buddies going out because its cool. Glad to see it to be honest with ya
IMO I don't see this happening.. In northern indiana coon huntin and even the competition hunts are growing from what I've seen.. Look at the number of dogs entered into the winter classic.. It's a record year for the winter classic if I'm not mistaken?

if you think curs cant be hounds come hunt with mine she will show you different, i dont think ukc will ever do that but you never thing strange things are happening now days.
opinion
im not so worried about ukc combining breeds. Before that happens i think we as coonhunters will be an extinct breed because of gun laws hunting laws etc. along with not having a place to turn a hound loose without someone complaining that you are bothering them or your dog is scarin their deer, turkey, snipes whatever it is they are into huntin. People nowdays are so worried you are gonna hurt their grass by walkin on it makes we wanna puke. alot of these so called hunters dont realize its only a matter of time before someone starts complaining about them and takes their rights away. For the record i bowhunt deer also and i coonhunt the exact same places. it has never hurt my chances at takin big bucks.
