Whats The Deal ?

WHY ARE SO MANY GARMIN OWNERS WANTING THE DC30 COLLARS OVER THE DC40...? DO THEY STILL MAKE THE DC30S ??
LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE 30S ARE WORTH MORE NOW THAN WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT...

The 30s seam to pick up better than the 40s atleast for me.
I thank its because the gps unit is contained with the battray on the 40s.

Maniac, Do your 40's drop signal and then pick it right back up?? I don't own any 40's yet but plan too in the not too distant future.

My 30's have out preformed most every 40 Ihave had them up against, but I'm curious just how important it might be to make sure the latest updates are installed and the long range toughskin is in place.

Anybody have any thougts on this subject??

I have both the 30 and 40 with long range antennas and here in the hills and mountains the 30 gets out better and is more dependable. The only thing I like better about the 40 is the way it charges.

I have never seen a 40 that was even close to a 30.

Posted by garminguru on 01-04-2013 11:24 PM:

I own 30s but hunt with others who have 30s and 40s. I personally can see no difference in how these collars compare in the woods that would even be noteworthy. The biggest difference I have seen though was the failure rate on the 40s.
VHF antennas failing, internal GPS antennas failing, transmitter itself failing. All of these things I have seen with the 40s my friends use. None of these things I have ever experienced with my 30s or the 30s my friends use!
My 30s are pushing 3 years old and never a single hiccup of any kind. Stock collars and stock antennas.

I agree... we run coyote hounds on the weekends and we have a mix of 30s and 40s and i see no difference in performance. My 30s were some of the first ones out so they are pretty old and they still work like new.

I have four 30's and one 40 the 30's with tough skin antennaes get way better range for me. I dont think I have ever seen the 40 pick up at over a mile. Also I only owned the 40 for about six months and it died stone cold dead. Of course it was under warranty so garmin fixed it but still had to pay shipping and be down a collar for a few weeks. My 30's have never missed a beat other than the antennaes went bad, and a twelve dollar toughskin one sure fixed that easy. My oldest 30 is 4 years old and my other 3 are 3 years old.

A friend had this very exact same problem. There was no fix for him except sending the collar and $89 for a different one.

From what I'm seeing so far on this post, Garmin went significantly backwards when developing the DC40 to replace the DC30. I sure am dissapointed to be reading so many reviews that indicate this may just be what we have to deal with.

Thanks for all your opinions, I hope more folks continue to post their opinions. Maybe, just mabe, someone from Garmin will be reading this and take note.

My DC40 starts loosin signal at around 700 in the hollers and has been as far as 1.2 miles on flat ground. They got stock antennas but not for long.Ive seen the 30s malfunction just as much as the 40s.

Posted by Rip on 01-05-2013 02:51 AM:

40 and 30 are the same collar. Same performance. Not enough difference in the two to be reproducable as far as the difference goes.

Theoretically you should get a little better GPS reception since the GPS antenna is on top of the 30 collar and under the neck on the 40 but in practice it doesn't seem to make a significant differance.

I own both. Neither outperforms the other consistently.

I have never found that a different ID # made any difference although some will argue with me until they are blue in the face.

ive got both and have put them together on the same dog and i couldnt honestly say one was consistantly better than the other
