Garmin Alpha Birdseye View

My hunting buddy just got a new Alpha and is interested in installing the Birdseye view on it...My question is how big of an area can you load onto it.. several states? a county? or a couple square miles.. I went to the website and saw the procedure but it really didn't go into detail how big of an area you can store on it....Also would those that have it give there opinion on it.. I don't care if its an alpha or 320 just want to see the general opinion on if there is much of an advantage to having the birdseye over the standard topo maps.. Thanks

Its not a big area when you go to upload it, it will tell you if the area is to large to upload or not.

Garmin told me it depends on ur internet on how big it will let u do.....I did a 40 mile by 40 mile square and it let me but took 2 and a half hours to do

Thanks for your reply's.... 40 sq. would be plenty good..Will it hold that much on the unit or do you have to use a s.d chip.. Those of you that have used it do you recommend it.. and is it a valuable hunting tool or more of a novelty.. all opinions appreciated..Thanks Jeff

Chip is best get something 16 gb or higher. Transfer all Birdseye downloads to the chip from base camp screen.

I bought an 8 GB card and loaded all of Mi lower pennensula, all of Indiana and the western 50 miles of Ohio from north to south. This was at standard definition. It required making 10 maps, 5 for Mi and 5 for In and took ALL DAY to do it. There is a way to see how much space is left on the card but I don't know how. Joe Newlin got me going and is prolly the best source of info on the Birdseye.

I just bought an alpha and a 32gb sd card. Base camp will only let me put the birdseye on the alpha and not the card. How do you put it on the card?

No. Because Birdseye requires the purchase of a subscription.

I have a question about BirdsEye.
When the subscription expires, do you loose your Bridseye on the Garmin or do you just loose the ability to make new maps?

But when you download it to a card it should always be on the card shouldn't it?

The files you have on your Garmin are not affected, so you can use them. You won't be able to download more imagery to your computer.

I also believe what you have on your computer (downloaded while you had a subscription) can still be transferred to your Garmin with no problem. For example, I have alot of Indiana due to AO, but I don't keep it on my Garmin all the time. It is however, saved on my computer.

Just the ability to make new maps Jim.

Just an update I bought the birdseye and have been loadin' her up.. I bought a 16GB card.. Staples had them for 12.99. Put all of IN... half of Ill.. half of OH and part of Ken. and lower mich all in standard definition...Then I put alot of Northern IN in High Def.. and my local huntin in Highest def and I still have 11GB left on the card.... Takes about an hour a section on my computer when you download the max it will let you.... Adam when you download your area's to your collection..Go to the top and click devices.. then click send to device.. Pick my collection.... a box will pop up and want you to click on alpha or memory card..click on card and hit download and you should see on the left under where your alpha is listed the memory card loading up.. If it does not show your card listed under the alpha you may not have installed the chip correctly..The minute I plugged mine in it read the alpha and listed the topo 100 map and right under that it listed the memory card... Good Luck.. with a 32 you can load more than you'll ever hunt...........So far I'm very pleased with the results.. Images seems to be very clear on the alpha screen..Snow's melting off time to see how it works in the woods!!
