bucket dogs
I try to only hunt wild coons no buckets although I do have a bucket out just incase I feel the dog needs an easy track to work when its being singled out my point is could these true bucket dogs be what is hurting the breed like ole so and so has a dog that will put you under a coon everytime but what ol so and so don't want you to know is the land he hunts he has five or more buckets laid out through it. I'm not bashing enyone that hunts on buckets I do it from time to time but I like hunting wma areas so most of my coons are wild no buckets but I plan on hitting a bucket tonight but prolly be another month befor I hit it agien just want a quick strike, tree go home hunt.

I do not understand how a bucket would hurt a breed? I can see where some people may think it would hurt a particular dog if that was all he was ever hunted on but that dog will throw the same pups whether he had ever seen a bucket or not!
What do you mean by hurt the breed?
Never can selective breed if all the dog is hunted on is buckets how do you know if its hot nosed or cold nosed if he is given a track.

No but the dog learns where that bucket is and will hit that first

I agree with you lee I've seen it done befor when I spectated a hunt dog went left the others all which way the one that hit the bucket got first strike first tree while the rest had to WORK to find their coons

I don't run scared, I run to scare!
Like all these 7- 10 month olds running and treeing their own coon makes for good advertising. I do have a problem and I am going to see if a bucket might fix it. I have a red dog, not redbone, That started running with other dogs right off the bat. One night they swam the river and stayed gone three days before the swam back. Ever since she has not hardly ever been at the tree with my other dogs. She is straight and coon crazy but she got it in her head her only job is to strike and run coons. She runs great and she is fast as lightening. When they tree she goes on and strikes another one. By the time I get that one killed she just about has another one treed and the other dogd get in on it and she stays with that track and leads it mostly till the tree. Then she is off again. I admitt she probably helps put more coons in the sack but that is a fault and one day it will cause a young dog to pull off the tree. On the other hand split treeing dogs should catch more coons in a nights run but I don't like split treeing dogs either. I hunt by myself alot. She is not dog shy, she just took a notion to run them.
I know she needs to be singled out. When I'm hunting I don't have time for it. A dog is supposed to click and go to treeing. So I am thinking of using a bucket right here on my place. Be like remeidial Home Schooling I recon. If she stays and trees, good. She always gives one locate and gone. She does that even if the dogs haven't even caught up on track yet. If she leaves and strikes another I will kill that coon and keep on doing that till there aren't any around to go strike. I like the dog and she would be top notch if that bucket helps he get to treeing. Also I am like you. She has never seen a caged coon or had one pulled up a tree. Or messed with a drag. I don't care for that kind of stuff any more than a bucket but something has to give.
I got one spot that is a den tree the dogs like to hit where I got this one bucket for pups and started dogs other then that if I'm on public lands I'm liable to turn aloose on one end of the 20000 acreas and my dog go through 100 or more acreas befor they hit a track then its all depends from there if I hunt a bucket I've tree the same trees though a few times.

And it really depends on how they are trained idc if they are trashy starten out like to run etc I can fix that its slick treeing not.being able to.solve.the math because they don't have a nose I can't stand I got a wipeout/lipper cross rightnow they all have a nose and the tree but they are not tree minded which I see as a good thing they want back a dog slick treeing just to be treeing

I'm confused.
How is turning loose near a bucket any different than letting go near oak, walnut, cherry, apple, peach, pear, hickory, persimmon, chinquapin, pawpaw, pecan, corn, watermelon, gords, huckleberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, grape, strawberry, ponds, creeks, rivers, lakes, chicken farms, feed storage, dumpsters and/or all the thousands of other places a coon might find food, shelter or water? Is it hurting the (whichever) breed that we are coon hunting exclusively in areas that coon inhabit?
Nah I don't think it makes a difference why a dog finds a track where he does so long as they can finish it.

Wild food sources vs a.bucket is different a bucket can't move a coon may feed on the patch of grapes etc but next week or so feed on something else they are always changen therfore the dogs is alway haven to change I'd breed to Mr lee because he hunts wild or Mr Jake garner because.he has the old school blood a lot happen to the breed since nailor, lipper,Hayes, harry. Etc

And if you look all.dogs are bred the same being.comp.hunted that's why ol so and so was a reproducer not because he was a coon dog just because more people are compaining these dogs I know I'm gonna hurt some feelens but I've seen more cross bred or behind the barn dogs whoop the fire out of these all grands it ain't funny I comp hunt from time to time don't always win but when I get beat its because it was a dog breed with a few.night champs and pr in its ped like me I've beat more all brands then I can count been offered 3 grand for chyennes mother but gave her to a buddy not because I didnt want her just because I didn't want some guy breeding everything that had a dingdong to her

Does the nailor and lipper cross good? I'm geussen the lipper would even out on the nose but put more tree in them but the nailor would add more tree pressure.

Try this take you a bucket cut a hole in it just big enough so.she can get her nose in it put the coon in the bucket when she sticks her nose.in it that coon will.eat her up it has worked for me on dogs not really tree minded but had it in them just had to bring it out this male I'm hunting sometimes.he trees sometimes he doesn't just needs time hunted but he is under a year other then that I'd find a dog that had a lot of tree in him.and breed him to her some might come out balenced some might not idk the blood so I'm just going on a hypothesis.

Hmmmm wild coon? Bucket coon??????
Does the coon live in buckets?
Yes, I know, I am just pulling your leg.
They are all wild coon, right?
Actually, I have used buckets for pups before. You are mistaken a coon will ignore a bucket over an in-season natural food source. It is like eating pizza every day. Then the neighbor grills a big ole steak and invites ya over. Are ya going to say no and eat pizza?
I will tell you my prospective. I drive 1800 miles. Do i want to draw a guide with buckets or do i want to get dry holed on a pine plantation? I will take my chances with the bucket dog.
