Garmins in hunts

Should garmins be allowed in ukc licensed hunts?

These numbers look to be about what I thought they'd be.

In my opinion, they shouldn't be allowed on all the time, but they should be allowed on if needed. When they are "needed" opens up a whole can of worms and rules that will take a lot of thought, but I feel if you are standing there for a long period of time not hearing your dog, you should be allowed to look to make sure he is still in a safe zone. Safety first!

Surveyor I like you idea....if you have not heard your dog in 10 min then you get 30 seconds to view your Garmin once your unit and collar are communicating. After that you can make a decision to keep hunting or with draw and go get your dog.

Perfect example.... Went to a 1 hour hunt lastnight, We cut loose on top of a mountain with a couple inches of fesh snow,branches runnin in multiple directions. Nice spot but the coons just wernt movin. We listened for the hour without a bark. Sure would have been nice if we could have checked to see how deep they were and in which direction.

i think that the rule should stay the same you either use your ears or dont hunt in the hunts i have a garmin and if i dont watch out i will catch me looking at it and not listening to my hound in my opinion a garmin is a good pup trainer and to see what your dog iss running but on the other hand it can make a hunter lose contact on how his hound sounds when it works a track or when they tree

Sometimes it's better to leave things alone. Garmins and telemetry have their place and time to be used - when you need to find a dog.

I don't need to use a Garmin constantly to tell me how far my dog is, and what direction it is during a licensed nite hunt. Next thing you know we'll be hunting robotic dogs.

I agree totally, makes no difference what kind of electronics another man uses. I believe that if allowing a tracking system gives a man a little piece of mind as to not loosing his dog it might draw more people to the hunts. Then again I know there's people out there that like to see small turn outs because it increases their odds of winning. I really don't see how a handler can cheat by using them. If the dog leaves the tree, regardless if it's caught on the garmin or by good ole eye sight he should scored accordingly! He still left the tree etc. Some times I think people dont want to see them allowed cause they're either scared of getting caught slick handling or they're afraid others might see how their dog really hunts. Most everybody uses them during the week pleasure hunting, but then when it comes to a nite hunt they're against them? That's like using your car all week then refusing to step foot in it on the week end. Lol just my opinion not meaning to ruffle anybodies feathers!

Just judge. They can't strike or treea dog without you hearing it! How they gonna cheat lol. Times are a changing. Let us vote on it anyhow. I'll bet good money. More times than not. I'll be getting to leave it on.

It's my belief that cheaters will always cheat no matter what so why not enjoy the luxury of knowing the chances of keeping your dog safe and bringing him home are higher with the use of a garmin.

I don't think it's a question of being able to hunt with out one I think everybody would agree all you really need is a dog and light. It's more for the benefits. Keeping dogs from getting on posted land, ran over, stole, being able to find them at the end of the hunt, etc. We really don't need to wear rubber boots, or have a leash for a dog either do we? But we use the technology for the safety, comfort, and because it just makes sense. I have yet to hear a reason not to use them make any sense to me. How about make it the handlers decision to use them or not? That way those who are so adamant about they don't them, or because of " tradition" can keep their " tradition " I don't think the first people who used a compass while coon hunting viewed them as to " advanced "

I would say no because not every hunter has a garmin and therefore the playing field is not equal. Use only during timeout!

We got folks that catch and trap coons all the time in live traps anyway. And there are place around this country with fantastic coon populations. Take it a step further and do like the wildlife endangered animal researches do, and "tag" the coons with a very small Garmin antenna and just pull out the garmins and see who REALLY trees the coon. No need for anybody to say a single word. Just pull out the garmin with all dogs and coons in that area programmed into the garmin and just sit on the tailgate and watch the race unfold right there. Just a thought.

I like Surveyor's opinion. If it's been 20 to 30 minutes gone and nobody has heard thier dog. I think asking the judge could you pull it out to check your dog to make sure he isn't in danger. I'm like this i'm not going to tree my dog off that thing and you sure as heck can't strike your dog off of it JMO.

i don't think a handler should be able to stand there and look at their garmin while dogs are trailing. yes, if you haven't heard anything after 20 minutes or so, check and see whats up. but if dogs are within hearing and trailing NO. I know that I can look at garmin and if my dog is not moving, or if its circling close then its just a matter of time he is going to pull the trigger and get treed. I think this could be an unfair advantage to some. Lets keep it as close to coon hunting as possible.

i have VERY mixed feelings on it...


i will say i do not own one...but even if i did, i dont think i'd feel differently...if i wanted one, i'd order one up right now...


what is the need or want for them to be allowed???


is this so they are allowed to be ON or actually pulled out and used and looked at at any time during the hunt???



so, if they would be allowed can i pull my beep system out anytime i want too???



i just really do NOT see the need or reasoning for allowing them...period. i think the rule should be dogs are allowed to wear tracking collars but all units MUST remain in the trucks until time out is called...end of story...

maybe keep it as it is..allowed to be carried but not powered on...i still dont and wont carry my beep system unless i know i am in rough country with scarce coon..

just dont see why they need to be allowed...
