Garmin/ Telemetry during UKC Hunt

For those that weren't there, UKC allowed Garmins to be powered on and in hand during the Friday night hunt at the Battle of the Breeds in Ada, OK.
Casts were asked to report on their likes/ dislikes, and how much (if any) the hunt was affected by using telemetry during hunt time.

In talking to several other hunters, I heard several concerns expressed, and valid comments made, both pro and con.

Seems like this might be something that is coming down the pike, and I am curious what everyone thinks..?

Knowing where your dog is would be a big advantage to anyone, especially if they wanted to pitch them in for a strike.

There are situations where it would be an advantage, though. For instance, knowing which direction a dog has traveled out of hearing, knowing you're gonna come into hearing of a dog treed as soon as you top the next hill, being able to determine if a dog not struck was getting close to a highway, etc...

I hope the day comes when we are allowed to use them, I hate sending my dog into territory that i have no idea where the roads are or how deep he is. I will also admit that i have become pretty dependent on it to keep track of where i am Lol.

I would have no problem with UKC allowing Garmins to be powered on during a hunt.

Like John above, when hunting strange territory I like to know where my hound is and where the rest of the cast is and where the truck is in case something odd would happen.

I wouldn't worry about someone pitching they're dog. Its simple......If the rest of the cast cannot hear the dog struck / treed then you..............the handlers call.

Also, if I treed my dog everytime the tree switch went off, I'd be minused out in the the first 5 minutes.......

In summary, I just don't have an issue with the Garmin....

seems like it would cause more arguing than anything! I can already hear somebody screaming minus that dog the garmin does not say its treed and it just hasn't had time to kick the tree switch yet. I think they should let us keep our alphas on us before anything like this happens.

i would like to see it happen. the garmin gives you no advantage if everyone has them. if your dog is good its good. a garmin is not going to change that.

I bet they get used at the Winter Classic one night...

Prior to the hunt, we were told that it was kinda a trial run, and that rulings or arguments were not to be made/ enforced using the garmin as evidence.
For instance, a handler whose dog had been declared treed but is determined to be moving could not pull his garmin to "prove" that his dog was stationary, etc...

I am all for it, if you are hunting in an area you don't know look at your Garmin and see if they are close to a road. I have been on a cast that the guide "forgot" about train tracks, only to remember when we heard the whistle.

The next coon my Garmin helps my dog tree will be the first. Woods are getting smaller and smaller, safety of the hounds should be more of a concern and the Garmin can help this issue.

Also there have been a couple cases lately of hunters being lost or killed during hunts and being able to track that hunter could save a life. With the Alpha the unit itself can be tracked by other Alpha units.

this should be something to vote on.

No garmins

Competition coonhunting should be about the dog and their handlers and thats it! 4 guys go to the timber, cut the dogs, strike and tree them without looking at the garmin. People need to stay true to where the sport originated from and not get caught up in new advances and trying to fix something thats not broken.

If safety is a concern theres rules in place already that address that, dog gets close to a road call a timeout- THEN turn the garmins on and get the dogs.


Too many slick handlers already bending the rules w/o the help of a garmin to help with their CW's. If UKC allows garmins on during hunts it will be a big mistake and give ppl more reasons to switch to other KC's. JMO

Wow! Safety for dogs and handlers is the first priority. Anything that enhances safety should be given due consideration.

Was this just the Astro's or were you allowed to carry the Alpha with you turned on as well?

Another question is what about a hunter who does not use a garmin? Who wants to hear a beep beep when there dog is getting deep and they're trying to listen? Maybe the beep beep guys dog is treed and he cranks his up to be loud? I guess this already happens with people talking loud or breaking stuff!

This was just a trial run, but we were allowed to run ANY tracking device. I understood that the Alpha could be on, but shocking was prohibited.

All you need is a flashlight and a compass. But those Garmins are nice though.


I vote NO Trackers, or atleast restricted use.

Most hunting accidents arent going to be prevented no matter if u have a garmin or not. Alot of good dogs have been titled with out a garmin. Garmins are a great hunting tool but lets keep some things pure to the sport.

I think that it would be bad for the sport to allow them to be turned on and carried during the hunt. If you are worried about the roads, look at them on your garmin before you turn em loose. If you are worried about your dog getting out of reach of the handheld, buy an extra and leave it turned on in the truck and hooked to a long range antenna. I believe my garmin to be the most valuable peice of equipment that I own, but would hate to see the day that they are allowed to be used in the hunts.
