why do you thinks dogs tree slicks and can they be stoped from doing it and what is the best training method to stop it.

Dogs slick tree cuz they come from dogs that slick treed and people cared more about how cool the dog looked barking up the wrong tree than breeding coondogs.

All those exaggerated traits come with a price ... and folks will give you methods to punish the dog for doing what he was bred to do ... but it's a lose-lose situation when the dog's genes are screaming in his gut to do something you don't want him to be doing ... the basis for training a top dog you like is to start with a nice young dog you like ... nothing any more fancy.

When folks talk about those top tier coondogs that win world hunts and purina races ... they describe nice all around dogs that do their job ... the term " nothing fancy" even comes up alot ... drive to finish and the desire to finish with a coon is another thing that comes up almost every time.

It's the weekend warriors and peddlers that started all those stupid sales pitches like dead loner , locate a kid can call , million dollar treedog , etc ....

Exceptional dogs start out as exceptional pups .... leave the ones with faults for those who wanna build their ego as trainers or dog traders ...

Hunting here in the mountains where it's straight up and down, I've found that the best method to break a slick treeing dog is a 22 shell. Only problem with that is to many people are unwilling to use that method and will continue to hunt the dog thinking it will stop or sell him to someone else that thinks they have got a coon dog. It cost no more to feed a good dog as it cost to feed a slick treeing fool.

this female just turn 3 she dosent do it all the time, in the last three nites, she has treed 3 coons, 1 den, 4 slicks. she is a hard tree dog, when shes treed she treed stay put, she can take alkinds of pressure. dont know on some tracks if she is pulling up treed to quick and not checking her self or what it maybe. it seems to happen more on the harder tracks, its almost like she gets frustrated if she cant get it worked out. ive seen this dog leave dogs standing on there heads on tracks get treed have the coon and there still trying work the tack out. ive seen her leave dogs on slick trees move the track on get treed and have the coon. maybe it the track,maybe it tracking conditions im not sure. when you go to the tree and see coon and then go to the next one and see nothing it gets frustrating. another question do you think you can give a dog to many coons.

I'd send her on if you are confident she has pulled up ... dogs by nature will try your case and if they can sell you a tree and you will buy it ... then both parties have come to a mutual agreement ... dogs are only as tough as the people that hunt them.


All dogs have to learn things and have their issues , people can hype their dogs and that's fine ... but in the real world no top dog was ever just born that way.

I'd bet she knows what she's doing and sounds like you could get make her a top notch dog with some adjustment .

Dogs learn us , they learn what they can pull and can't .... bumping off game , locating around too much , pulling up on tough ones , quitting tracks to find better ones .... all that stuff can be improved if you want to ... if not , every dog you ever own will have holes in it ... good luck , I think you got the makings of a nice one from the sounds of it.

Sounds more like this dogs handler is just getting to old, to make it to the tree before the coon climbs out. LOL!
