spreading of disease at shows
this happened at a conformation event. I searched the coonhound rulebook and there was nothing about vaccines or diseases. this could easily affect the hounds esp for those that go to conformation events and vice versa thereby exposing any dog it comes into contact with.
shouldn't this be a part of ALL dog events rules (coonhound or otherwise)???

I would like to bring something very important and serious to everyone’s attention. I do not want to cause panic by any means but I do believe this needs to be addressed. Allegedly there was a case of Parvovirus at an event out in California couple weekends ago and a few puppies did not survive. Some of the affected puppies did survive and are being treated.
This is a very unfortunate event but is a very serious situation that we should not take lightly. The first I had heard about this situation was this past weekend at an event in Columbus Ohio. There were no cases of Parvovirus at this event, but there were dogs that were at the event in CA. These dogs were removed from the show grounds as soon as it was known that they could have possibly been exposed to the virus. That’s when I realized that this situation could spread like wild fire across the entire county very easily if all of us are not careful.
Exhibitors and dogs travel from show to show, from week to week going from one end of the country to the other creating the perfect situation to spread disease. Remember, I am not trying to cause panic I am just trying to raise awareness about the possibilities.
With the new Dog Event Rules just being released this past week I wanted to point out that there is one rule that has been revised and I thought this would be a good time to bring this to everyone’s attention. Remember this is for the protection of our sport and our dogs so I would hope that everyone takes this seriously and act responsibly if this situation would apply to you. The rule states:
Chapter 1, Section 4. Required Inoculations. All dogs six months of age or older must have inoculations for Rabies, Canine Distemper and Canine Parvovirus to be present on the grounds of any UKC event or to be eligible to compete at UKC events. Dogs under six months of age present on the grounds of any UKC event must have current inoculations for Canine Distemper and Canine Parvovirus. Any dog that is known to have been in contact with a canine communicable disease within thirty days prior to the event may not be on the grounds of a UKC event. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.
This rule includes any dogs that you might have at home that might not have been at the event that the exposure happened but then you had a dog that was at the event that you brought home and that dog could have exposed those dogs. This does not mean you as a person cannot go to the event just the exposed dogs cannot attend the event.
Below is a link for the for the new Dog Event’s Rules and Misconduct & Discipline Guidelines for Dog Events, please be familiar with all UKC rules and procedures when participating in UKC events.
http://res.ukcdogs.com/pdf/Miscondu...iplineRules.pdf
I want our events to continue and be great, successful and FUN. So let’s allow that to happen! Please be responsible and consider the safety of all dogs. If your dogs may have been exposed to any communicable disease, please keep them home.
Found this on UKC home page.
I'm not sure that just being at a show or hunt would mean a dog was exposed . Being sure your dogs are up to date would be the safest course of action.
I'm sure we've all been to large events where there may have been a sick dog and never knew it.
Always been told Kennel Cough was like us having a cold & it has to run it's course. Mean time most of us go to work & school & work thru it out of necessity .
Does the new rule mean you have to carry your shot records with you to the hunts, shows ,and whatever UKC event you attend?
We keep ours up to date as well. Also try not to expose pups until they are fully covered. My last litter never left their pup yard until they were one week into their 3rd shot.
People need to be more responsible about their animals. Its not hard nor expensive to do the right thing and vaccinate.

the point was to bring awareness of this happening, and that it could happen at a coonhound event, and the fact that I could not find anything about this in Coonhound rules. it was only in the dog events rules (which is conformation events). I think it should be a part of the coonhound rules as well since most ppl will not be reading the dog event rules.
