There are beetles you can buy that will clean the skull. Theres more too it than throwing some bugs in a box though. You have to cut eyes and hair and get the brain out too, maybe something else. Some of the guys that I have seen do it put the beetles and skull in an old chest freezer or plexiglass box. Another feller over this way ties a rope to them and throws the skull in a pond for about a month. Just a couple of ways I've heard of doing it. Probably the easiest way is to take it to a taxidermist.

Arrow Skull Mount

Skin it down to the nose. Get a big pot,big enough for the whole head. Get your water boiling. Dip it in for about 15 minutes. Take a air tip on a air hose and blow the remaining brain matter out of the skull. It may require to put it back in the boiling water. Don't keep it in the water for more than 15 minutes at a time. When you get it clean change your water and add a cup of bleach. Just get the water hot and let the skull sit in it for about 15 to 20 minutes. Be careful to keep the antlers out of the bleach solution. After the skull is clean and dried take some polyurethane and spray the skull. Be patient, its time consuming.

We boil them also and for the first time this year used a pressure washer to clean the skull and it worked slicker than a whistle. Try it.

There are several ways to clean a skull and I have tried most of them. The following is the best way to date that I have found and this is the way that most taxidermist do it.

You will need three chemicals. You can order them from:

http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com

These chemicals will do 10 skulls so you will have enough to last a while or you can split the cost with a friend.

Sodium Carbonate 10lbs $9.90

Hydrogen Peroxide 40 1 quart $6.10 (not like what you buy at walmart)

Basic White 1 pound $16.00

skin the hide off the skull and cut the neck bone off so only the skull is remaining.

Make sure you have a pot big enough that the entire skull can be submerged under the water level.

Fill the pot with water and put the skull in before you boil and make sure the water level is where you want it. It does not hurt the antlers to be partially submerged but keep as much antler as you can out of the boiling water.

Start heating the water (do it outside if you are married) when the water is starting to vaporize add 1 cup of sodium carbonate per gallon of water used and stir until it is disolved. The sodium carbonate is a degreaser and is the most important chemical. You can use sodium bicarbonate, which is baking soda but it does not work as well and you have to use a lot more of it.

When the water is close to boiling put the skull in for 30 minutes and let is boil. Take it out and check it and if the meat is falling off then you are done. If it needs another 15 minutes put it back in. Do Not over boil it. I have never had to boil one (deer) more than 45 minutes.

Let the skull cool enough to handle. You can then scrape/pick the skull clean or take it to the car wash and pressure wash it...be careful if pressure wash because you can damage the fragile bone in the nasal cavity.

After removing all the cooked meat let the skull dry for a couple of days.

The next step is getting the skull a perfect bone white.

take a small bowl and put a 1/3 cup of the basic white powder in it. Slowly pour the Peroxide 40 into the bowl until it makes a paste. add powder or peroxide as needed to get a paste consistency. Becareful not to get this on anything you don't want to bleach. DO NOT GET IT ON THE ANTLERS! This is the same stuff that beauty shops use to highlight/bleach womens hair.

Take a small paint brush and dob the paste on the skull. Make sure you cover the entire skull teeth and all.

Let this set for 24-36 hours in a cool dry place.

After 24-36 hours it should be dry and flaking off. Rinse it off with a garden hose in the yard and let it sun dry. It will now be nice, clean & white.

If your antlers were partially submerged in the boiling solution they will be dark in the area that was wet. Take a wire brush and brush them by hand and they will return back to the original color with only a few strokes.

That is it...now you have a perfect Euro mount.

Basic White

You can get it from Vandykes....I put the link in my thread.

If you know someone that owns a womens beauty shop you might be able to talk them out of a 1/2 cup of it which will be enough to do one skull.

We love doing euro mounts at my house! What we will usually do is throw the skull in an ant bed and let the ants take care of the hide and meat, then boil it as some of you have already described. Thank you for the more detailed description of the boiling process...we'll definitely be trying some of your tips!

I always use a pressure washer. just be careful around the nasal cavity as the bones are brittle. it's a little messy but works good. You can also leave out the bleach and go to wal mart and get a $.99 can of flat white paint and save the bleach problems. just tape off the horns and hold it at a distance and overspray until looks like what you want. I do several of these a year and they turn out great.
