Fleshing beam

It's been a while since I've fleshed anything and I no longer have a good beam. Can anyone give me some information on making a beam and also tell me how you keep it stable. Space is a concern in my basement so I'd like to make it so that it's out of my way when not in use. Thanks to anyone who offers advice.

a 2 x 8 hardwood blank from a local saw mill works best

use a band saw to give it the basic shape you need and then use a belt sander to finish up

you can use a pine 2x8 but it won't last nearly as long due to your knife slipping off the hide and gouging out a sliver - then you have to dress that down with a draw knife, and repeat.. trust me i know

if you want to make it stowable you can use a large piano type hinge on the base and attach to the wall of your work area - makes it foldable.. you will have to have a drop leg under the beam also

i'm sure you can find a picture of a good set up on trapperman.com

Helped make a few out of old saw mill slabs ,Just debark them ,,if you look you will probably find one with the right taper and most likely will be free !
