Took him and his dad to the vet she said he only had one i checked sure enough.Bad thing is he is really doing good with or without company minds good.So whats a guy to do.I know I wont raise a litter out of him But he is one of the most enjoyable dog to hunt and he is getting better I know alot of people castorate bird dogs. But if I was to go I would at least liek to go with one of them. anyone else have this happen to them

That testicle is probably the LAST piece of that dog's anatomy that he uses to tree a coon.

Chances are he could live a long and prosperous life doing what you want him to do.

But there is also evidence that cryptic testicles put him at an increased risk of cancer.

If he were mine, and I really liked him, I would have him castrated and the undescended testicle removed as well.

The cancer risk would be enough for me to castrate him if he is doing good. He will be doing the same good job after he heals up and you will have one less thing to worry about.
Another thing his voice won't get higher if castrated. LOL!

IMO the cancer risk is pretty small, especially as young as he is.

I wouldnt do anything at this point if he were mine.

I didn't mean to make it sound as if he was in imminent danger of developing cancer.

What I said was that it INCREASES HIS RISK of cancer.

I would have him neutered, simply to ensure that his crypt-orchid genes do not accidentally get spread....and the fact that if I like him that much I might be tempted to breed him down the road.

I lost the best one I ever owned last year due to cancer. Get him checked.....make sure he only has one and it's not just that one didn't drop. Mine had one that didn't drop. Everybody said he will be fine. The tumor was a bit over 2 1/2 lbs. in a 30 lb dog. Still regret not getting something done early on.

yeah buddy i got an old catahoula male i call ol one nut . he's seven now and sired several litters . no health issues as of yet . did the vet do an ultra sound on the dog to see if it was unformed or just hung up and didn't drop ? sometimes they get hung up inside for some reason and surgury can bring em down . but like i said if he is a good dog and gonna become breed worthy , i'd keep him intact till i bred him you can nueter him anytime in his life .

Having one nut is hereditary. Why would ya wanna pass that on?

not allways a hereditary cause . unformed is hereitary hung up is not . only an ultrasound will let you know for sure . my cats is there just didn't drop . we did the ultra sound and found it lol . my ol country vet said he would live a long and healthy life just the way he is and should sire many healthy pups . none of his offspring or grand offspring have had any issue with their testies .sires and grandsires to this dog had know issues . sires of gyp had normal as well . i'd have the vet due the ultra sound . but i do know all my dogs history that helps a bunch .
