My reason is

When I am hunting young dogs I don't ever jump the coon out and rerun it. I have had it cause a dog to start milling and leaving the tree thinking that it has come down or jumped out. Had it happen to a young one before and caused problems. I make it a habit to tie em all. I also teach em to give at the tree not to have to stand on the tree where the coon climbed. Keep ya out of trouble with fang pressure but that ain't all I do for that but tieing them backs helps. Everyone has different ways of working with a dog. He first has to have it in him or you can waste a lot of time. Wayne I didn't mean to take your post but I am with u on the tieing

tieing a hound at the tree!

Well blue iron I don't know about wayne's reasoning's for tieing a at the tree , but I do know two or three reason why I tie mine at the tree exspecially young hounds it keeps them in the habbit of staying put and not leaveing tree , also it helps keeping hounds from back tracking , another would be in competition hounds are handled and secured when the cast gets to the tree , third if your ready to hit the truck after getting one tree your hound is already ready to go. thats just a few reasons why I tie mine back at the tree.

Tree Dogs

Are born not made, Track dogs come from hunting, night after night. 1 + 2 even 3 hours a night just don't cut it. When your in the woods long enough at night and the frost is on your head. you can say the dogs been hunted tonight.

Also, shoot the coon when you know your dog learned something.

J.R. If you worried about the dog ever leaving the tree. the dogs mind is undecided or has dought the coon is on the tree. He has not been treed long enough. If he is treed like she should be. Shoot the coon to him and he will get better. It's a waiting game not a hurry up and give him the reward for something not really earned.

It

is what I was taught by some guys who always packed a coondog, they were also Competition hunters.. !!! Why mess with success.. My reasoning is this.. You want to end every track at a tree, with the dog on the tree.. Some dogs, not all, will see ya coming, get excited about what they think is gonna happen next.. and may loosen up a bit, anticipating a coon to drop. to stop that ya tie em to train em what ya want... This also happens to help in scorecard hunts, ya never want one to mill to risk a minus, or bump into other strange dogs and cause a problem.. This also stops the crazy running the tree habit you see pop up with some..All the real good dogs I've ever owned really never milled, I just did as taught and I never started a problem or had one.. As I said, why mess with success.. Perry, I concur 100% with what ya said... Control at the tree is easy to do and has benifits... I will NEVER EVER RE RUN A COON, if the dog needs it he gets it.. Everything is ended at the tree..

I tie

all of mine back to Just for the reason that are posted. Just been a good habit had a dog that would not fight until the coon hit the ground. that thought me a lot about tieing them up. Also do not tie them close enough that they can get to each other.

Tieing at the tree

Wayne,
I have been following these ole hounds for a long time and I agree with you 100%. One more thing I would like to add is that when a young dog starts treeing "right" he trees where the scent is the strongest and that would be where the coon went up the tree. I do not tie a dog (after he is treeing good) to the side of the tree where the coon went up, I move him around to a different side at each tree. I have seen to many dogs get possesive over "Their Spot" on the tree. This lets a dog know that he can move around the tree when necessary, stay out of trouble and still get some fur............Tim

Hussler

Mr. Householder always tied Hussler to the tree and God knows it wasn't to keep him there. If he got loose at the truck and you didn't shoot the coon he would go back. About the only fault he had. I am glad my dog don't have to be hunted every night until the frost is on my head to be a coon dog because I can't hunt 7 nights a week and do that any more like Doc and I used to. Tie a dog at the tree is a good practice Wayne for what ever reason. Dave

Posted by Wayne Valentino on 11-16-2012 06:03 PM:

Well

Dave, the main guy who taught me to tie em at the tree was Mr. Hussler himself,,, Him and Cliff Brown... As if you didn't already know that !!! Heaven knows ya never needed to tie one of Doc's dogs at a tree, heck they treed so hard they missed the gun crackin or the coon hittin the ground alot of the time....

Great post Wayne,
just 2 nights ago I was with a young hunter 19.his young hound got treed and i said tie him up about 5 or 6 times well of course he s looking in the tree and Bam his hound takes off. lesson learned I hope.
I do leave a young hound not tied when i`m hunting them by their self (alone) and keep a close eye with my lite low.If he or she loosens up I correct them encourage them to get back on the tree.I agree with mr.vaughn on moving the hound to the other side of the tree.makes alot of sence.I`ll adjust mine from now on.

I would prolly say one of the golden rules at the tree.TIE THEM UP !!!

Good post but on this one but I'm going to have to disagree with tying a hound at every tree from the start. I have found myself that in order to control what's happening at the tree before you get there you have to rely onhearing alone. Then you get to the tree to see what's really going on. If I turn two hounds loose myself and they get treed, I get to them, watch and observe how they tree together. It's the only way to find out if corrections have to be made. Now and this is just my opinion, if you and friends have 4 young male hounds, first time being hunted together and you cut them in the timber and they get treed together fairly quick. On the way in you hear a bunch of blowin going on in there, are you just going to go in there and leash them all back and shine the tree or go in and adjust them accordingly and make corrections. If you want to make a young hound jealous, keep tying him back at the tree with company and my thinking is you'll get there soon. I've seen it happen. As far as the thiery of tying a hound to the other side of the tree so he doesn't get jealous or possesive of the spot where the coon has climbed. If ya have or start to see this problem, the best way to fix it is to go into that tree and claim that darn spot yourself and let your hound keep treeing. Place your back against that tree and everytime he comes and tries to crowd you, take a backhand and put it up beside his or her head and you'll fix the problem. That's the only way I found that works and the younger you start the better. Can't do that with them being tied up on every tree. Good post but I think it has to go both ways when hunting one alone and you certainly can't fix problems if ya tie all hounds at the tree as soon as you get there. They have to learn to tree together under control by the owners unless you want to light break everyone which I don't believe in!! JMO!!

thanks for the input !!!! you bring up some nice points and a somewhat different spin to achieve a good result and achieve the same end product.... a top dog that trees properly and doesn't start problems with others.....

I check the tree before I tie

I do not tie at dens or slicks. If it leaves before that, may have figured it out, only tie if I see the coon. Or it needs a boot to get out of there.

Posted by ov_blues on 11-17-2012 08:45 PM:

I tie them at most tree, but sometimes I don't. If I have a young dog and it's their first few trips to the woods and they didn't run and tree with the other dogs, I might let the young dog venture around some to check things out. I've seen the light bulb come on in some dogs after I'm at the tree and have the other dogs tied back. I like to observe them anyway and just tieing them up so they can bark up a tree or out of excitement didn't really gain anything. Once the young dog starts running and treeing more is when I am going to make sure I tie them up for awhile anyway. Then I am going to start leaving them loose after I arrive at the tree so I can test them and correct if necessary. Then if they pass those tests, they are going to get tied from there on out.

Tied and rewarded works most of the time. The reward could be the coon or some words of encourgement as you are pulling them off the tree. I think shooting a coon out and then laying a drag with it right off the tree is as bad as not tieing the dog up at the tree. JMO.

I snap the dog on the leash ( READ THIS)

Let it stand on the tree right where it went up. Dog trees a little bit harder. Shoot the coon. Most the time with one shot. Tell the dog here he comes. The dog hears the limbs snappin. Then hears the thump and goes too it as I command it to.

I know by reading the post above what you are all having problems with, and I will tell you this. In my opinion. You missed a key initial training essential with your dog before you got started.
The guy told you what to do but you interputed what he told you wrong.

THATS like me telling you to go jump off a bridge and pointing over there. But where I tell you there is a Bungie cord to tie to your feet first. What your doing is jumping without the cord.
MISSING OUT ON ALL THE FUN.

So Now you have a dog that is A LOOSE TREE DOG.

How do you tighten up a loose tree dog. A kill happy idiot.

The next time he trees you one, and it's up there. Shoot up the tree once or twice. let him run around like an idiot. the only encourage him when he gets back on the wood.

KEEP Doing it until he stays put.

PS. At this time of the year. USE 22 Shells with volume.

truth

And that is the one and only truth? I've had some good ones and still learn all the time but I would never do any of that around the tree with my dog. No disrespect, but the "truth" depends on perspective I guess.

Posted by J.R. Heiny on 11-18-2012 12:52 AM:

my last post

i all I was meaning was for what ever reason no matter what it teaches the hound to stay put until I get there and find the coon and get it knocked out or in competition like some on here say it helps prevent milling around or hounds being a bother to other hounds.

TIED AT TEEE ?

I have never owned a dog that had to be tied at tree if a young hound showed interest of leaving tree after treed he was sent to belong to someone else ! I suppose there are some bloodlines of bluedogs or some crosse that this must be done to get them to stay treed but WOW guys why would you want a hound of such low interest in staying put. I know this a RULE in night hunts but if you are feeding a dog that must be tied back and thats the only way he would stayed treed its time you looked else where for a real coon dog . What some of you guys will put up with in a hound and then say you have a stud dog a coon dog <<< ROFLMAO LOL LOL LOL LOL ! WAM BAM !! WOW TREE OLE CHARLIE NO TIE BACK NEEDED ,NO LEAVING TREE, NO MILLING AROUND , NO GETTING OFF TREE TO SMELL THE ENDS OF FEMALES READ THIS AND PAY ATTENTION .. << >>> NO TIE AT TREE NEEDED A REAL HUNTING DOG, COON DOG ! I hope you guys get a better dog in 2013 try just a little harder !!

That is my helpful opinion

If someone has a problem with a young dog not staying on the tree. that will help fix the problem.

Scott, this seems to be a problem for some unfortunate hunters.
I gave an opinion on what could help these dogs improve.

Has to be one of the best post I`ve seen on here or i`ve read on here in along time. just because some tie their hound some preceive it has problems at the tree. Its amazing to me how someone who has never been to the woods with a hound knows what type of hound one is packing just because you tie your hound at the tree.I guess I still have alot to learn.... I personally have done it for 25 years plus of hunting just somthing I do and recomend. This is the way I do it.

I actually started tying a hound back way back when I was hunting Ellis Blue jim knocked a coon out to him and it bout killed him landed right on his neck just another reason to tie one.
Wayne good post and reading some of the post I `m wondering who training who LOL keep em coming.

Who is training Who.... I like that... It is a common sense measure to achieve good results on several issues that could / might possibly come about... OR NOT COME ABOUT...So be pro active and do it !!!! Simple.... If it never became a problem because you were pro active then you never realised you stopped something in advance, therefore, no problem ever surfaced that needed corrected.... Win/Win !!!!!
