-- My pup has Parvo (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928281558)

My pup has Parvo

My two pups have Parvo. They are 6-7 months old. Both have had their 7 way shots twice. I have been giving them Pedalite and Gatorade, trying to get them to eat some baby food too. They will drink some, but have trouble holding it down. Vet wants almost $1500 to treat both dogs, and gives them about 50/50 chance of surviving. Going to try this on my own, so any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks for any help.
Matthew M. Fann.

I had a neighbor whose pup got parvo. I fed it for him before work, at lunch, after work and at midnight. I would leave it a bowl of food and force fees it Gatorade through a syringe.

Try Pedialite instead of Gatorade...the Pedialite is sugar free and will boost the electrolytes better than the gatorade....go to your local farm store and get a 7 way shot asap...force that Pedialite down its throat and keep fresh water in front of it!!!

Parvo

Been giving them fluids, but they won't touch any food. They have lost a ton of weight in the last 2 days.

Majestic Treehound can give you some pointers ... might involve an iv if they won't drink or at least forcing it down em' ... but if they don't test em' for parvo it can also be coccidiosis or coronavirus ... it's hard to give antibiotics when they are that poorly , but something like amprol or corrid is about gonna be a necessity .... but search for parvo on here or ask Majestic , he wrote a big essay or whatever on the subject that will get you in the game ...

Give an iv under the skin 100cc twice a day. Same as giving a sub Q vaccination. If they still have enough lose skin you can do it in one place. It will look like a baseball but it will be absorbed into their body and you will notice a difference within a day. It will save them as long as you haven't waited too long. When they can eat start with cooked rice hamburger and plain yogurt. There is no magical pill to cure them of parvo you just have to treat the dehydration because that is what will kill them as it runs the course. If you don't have the supplies you can tell your vet what you want to do and get it from them. If you use a vet thats worth a **** they should be able to show you what to do but it sounds like you might have one that wants nothing but to send a big bill....

search the main board for parvo and read (like dirt devil said) what majestic treehound says to do. It saved both my pups that had parvo. I even called him to make sure I was doing everything right. Real nice guy. I wouldn't give a 7 way right now. Seems a seven way is the wrong thing to give young pups anyway. It overloads their immune system. Give them an IV like mentioned below. Puppies don't die from parvo they die from dehydration. IV, stop the puking and stop the diarhea then hold on for 5-6 days and your pups will rebound. Act quick though!

i have used pepto bismal and pedialite before.i saved 5 pups out of a litter of 9.it was tough for a little while but they came along just fine.

i took a male pup to the vet 3 days after i got him.he was sick with porvo.3hrs and $400 later the vet called me and recomended we let the pup go.then they wanted to charge me $65 for disposal.
you are takin a chance either way.

Thanks for all the Help.

Thanks for all the help. That was an experience I will never forget. Never seen anything that sick before.
Well our female seems to be recovering, she will walk around and drink water on her own. Still wont eat much and sleeps a lot. The male Flash died last night about 2:00 am. He never seemed as sick, then just went down hill fast. We did everything we could. Real sad to watch.

Now starts the disinfecting process on everything we own. Inside and out. Think I'm going to spay water/bleach then go back with some kind of Parvocide. Any suggestions would be great.

Hope no one ever has to go through this. Keep strange dogs out of your yard and give them their shots.

Thanks Matt.
