I've broke em' by hauling butt and cutting them off .... get between them and the deer and make em' think their world was gonna end .... but it only works if you catch em' the first time or two and they think you can outrun them every time ... it don't work after they know you are hit and miss about it.

They say putting deer scent in a barrel with the dog and spinning it around or rolling it down a hill with rocks in it will slow em' up for a spell ... I'd say the short term answer for you is gonna be something along the lines of breaking scent and working em' at the house in a barrel or the electric fence thing like Wick says to do .

my old male started running deer over a year ago..... had 2 seperate old timers tell me to put a billy goat in his pen for a few days........ i found a free one on craiglist a (pygmy even).
put him in pen with old dog for a week and he will top the crest of a hill.....and if there are deer there he will come back.....dont know what that goat did....but he hasnt even thought about running a deer sense....... i really thought i was being horn swaggled.....but it worked.

if that pup is 6 months old.i would let him run them for a little while.when he gets tired he will come back.them deer will teach him to drive a track and he wont be afraid to get in there deep. you need to drop some coon to him.as he ages and is gettin fur put to him he will slack off the deer some and when your ready borrow a shocker find some deer in a field and turn him loose on them and light him up.

Totally agree with last 2 posts. Let him run and learn how to run a track. He will either quit on his own or need some adjustments after he starts yreeing good. I have 4 month old pup that I hope will run a deer or hog like hes tied to it. Sounds crazy I know, but I'd rather have a pup run thru the country than listen to hom boohoo around in 5 acres for an hour.

j

he dont have aproblem pushing a track. he can flat out fly. im just tired of trying to run him down

Posted by mike mizell on 11-05-2012 12:43 AM:

quit chasing him.he will either come back or get treed somewhere.
unless you have to get to him on account of a road.

i know where there is a dog now that will fire off on a deer if he cant find a coon track.the first good coon track he runs up on he will quit running the deer and get wooded.he has won a bunch of hunts like this.

the only problem with that is if he does quit it which i doubt it he will just pick up another track. hell i wouldnt never get him back. if he was getting hooked alot more i could understand that. i am just going to leave him in the pen and turn some cage coons out until he can tree at least four in a row

Posted by Dirtdevil on 11-05-2012 03:12 PM:

Deer and coyotes are running game , dogs seldom ever trail them .. it's not the same kind of practice needed for coon by a long shot .... all kinds of housedogs will run deer forever but those same breeds can't even warm up a coon track.

The best practice for a coondog is running coon and doing what you bought it to do ... and without costing a fortune in gadgets just to get the dog to think about coon and find out if he's worth feeding.

The scent bags in a barrel work decent , enough to curb him and get him on some coon .... or do the Wick method.

Until you can get an e-collar system back, get you a 50 ft. to 150ft rope or longer. ride the roads till you see deer crossing. Put the pup on the rope and dump on the deer red hot let it get warmed up 1 bark or 2, 25 yards and call that pup with a stearn voice bak to ya and yank on that rope.
If the pup dont come in to ya, winch that rope back all the way to ya with pup in tow. It will help break em but some dogs get wise to it.

hire a dog trainer.thats my best advice.
most folks in here dont know how to make a real coondog.they just go buy the best they can find.
be careful what you do with him.good luck!

Old Timers used the rope method long before me and the invention of shock collars. I didnt make that up and I've used it for years. Nuff Said

the stick Jefferson used wasnt one you picked up off the ground but im sure ol George could wield a pretty big stick.

Break him before he ever leaves the pen. Get deer glands and hang them in his pen in the corner off an electric fencing unit, when he touches it, it will bite him back.

the best method for a hound or any dog for that method is a good stern voice unless it is hard headed another thing on that get you a fresh killed coon hang it up let the dog tree on it slit the coons throat and let that blood drip down on his face he will never want anything but a coon after that I have worked with alot of pups and that is how I most of the time get them treeing if they arent doing it by 1.5 year old your situation is he will tree just torn between 2 things that he wants to hunt once he gets the taste of the coon blood the deer will never cross his mind again

Good luck and hope this works for you i know some pups can be a true pain Rebel is just setting in the lot because he is ill towards a male dog and i cant break him from it and it kill me his momma is a real nice coon dog and he will tree the hell out of a hide or caged coon

There are a bunch of threads and opinions on deer breaking, but whatever method you choose or not at 6 months old I tend to agree is not entirely a big concern, still a pup and still learning.
But you must remember breaking from undesired game is an ongoing task that must be reaffirmed throughout the hounds entire life from time to time. A hound will backslide when tempted.
The method of using a rope is like an extended leash breaking exercise and will suffice until the pup is older and you can aquire an e-collar system. Which when used properly there is not much out there better for correction. IMO
