help with dog after coon is shot out

I have a dog here that once he trees and the coon is shot down, won't move on easily. He just plain likes to kill coon. I have tied him back and not let him fight it and just skin it and pack it up, I've let him fight it and watch me put it away, I've walked him really far from the spot and he still runs back and searches for the coon, I've got after him for going back and even then it takes him a while to get out and find another one. If you don't shoot the coon out he will move on just fine. I'm working on some pups that need a kill season and they tree with him but will stay with him and I don't want them to pick up on what he's doing.

How can I break him from constantly searching for the coon that isn't there anymore? It's driving me insane!! Thank you!

When i have them do this i get pretty hard on them, if its bad enough i might even shock them, i hunt curs and they get really gritty sometimes, i just get on them consistancy pays off etc...

My 2 cents worth says if the pups are treeing with him cut them on their own from now on & when he does tree dont feed him the coon... This should also make him hunt harder if you arent knockin em out to him . He must think the game is over when the coon hits the ground im guessing. If that dont work maybe try cutting him right from the tree after you kill the coon instead of walkin him away too far... My experience is that alot of dogs wont return to the tree because you are standing there but depends on the dog & the situation... Good Luck!

another thing on my post, people will tell you not to shock or that stuff, but it don't seem to matter if its dead they know its dead, the worst dog i ever had for this i just say dead coon now and he goes right on, and i shocked him good for it.

Thanks for the replies! If I get after him hard about it he will move on slowly. It's almost like he doesn't want it to be over lol. I need to get a shock collar real bad!

Maybe if I have one person stay at the tree and I walk him 15yds and cut him. If he goes back have the other person kick him outta there?

I've had afew like that, I use this to my advantage and jus let em grab it and have him carry it out for me. Works out pretty nice, once he's carried that weight all the way back to the truck he's not so eager to dive on it. Just my two cents may work may not.

I never turn a dog alose close to a tree he just tree 15 yards is mighty close he isn't lien to you he is doing his job tellen you coon are up that tree I wouldn't shock him on the tree unless it was the last resort just leash him up while Pullen him from the tree tell him dead coon go about 100yards or more and cast him in a different area then where you just was if he goes back to the tree switch him leash him up and tell him dead coon load him up in the box an turn alose on a different area then were you just was you turnen so.close to.that tree as taught him to do that because in his mind the coon is still in that tree.

I have a walker like this even if you dont shoot it out the other dogs you can say go find another one they go on but she doesnt used to say dead coon and it worked but now it doesnt shes a real hard hunter but after she trees she goes on a lead while the others hunt it kills her but its working im trying to train t young dogs and a 3 year old that can do it alone but he doesnt have confidence unless she is in the woods trying to break him from it slowly and its working with him being hunted alone hope this helps I know how frustrating it can be

I can walk him over a 100 yds and he will still go back. Not treeing just looking for the coon on the ground. I hunt huge woods so j want him to hunt through it not tree one and be done. He usually moves on if the coon isn't shot down, he just likes to kill them so bad he continues looking for it on the ground once its done

When starten a dog you want to always leave on a good note if you turn him alose and his trees a coon put him up an call it a night because the next time he might not do nothing or run junk then all that work was in vein but I understand what your sayen best way I can think is when he goes back to the tree and mules around grab him by the jaws and look into his eyes and say no loud and firm then switch him on but they could end up being a down side to that to were when you get there he breaks tree befor you can leash him and goes on hunting to find another coon I've seen that happen with some dogs that the coon was shot out to them every time but remember I said some dogs not all I geuss just find something that works best for you and stick with it but don't get trigger happy if you use a e collar I only use those for leash training because I like trashy dogs when they first start out hunting they usely learn what to hunt and what not on thier own.

Thanks for the replies! He's a finished hound and 5 yrs old, never has had a good kill season on him so maybe he just gets so excited when they start comin down. He's a hard headed fool so I will keep workin at! Thanks again!

You're on the right path. I have had a friend walk the dog off (about the same distance ) and I was waiting at the tree with a good green switch. That way the dog knew that I was unhappy with him coming back to the tree. I had to break a couple of hard tree dogs and they weren't too happy about getting switched and I had to let them know I wasn't too happy with the way they showed their displeasure too. After a couple of these "encounters" I could turn the dog loose from 3 steps away from the tree and they went hunting.

dont skin the coon put him on the leash lead him a 100 yard from the tree have a switch lay the coon on the ground turn him loose and when he tries to grab the coon tell dead coon. the more he tries to grab it the rougher you get a few times of this he will learn to go back to hunting.

i think you answered your own question shoot it out and move
on dwn the rd.the old timers i have hunted with have always
said nothing good can happen turning loose twice in the same spot

I agree If we slick tree I still move on down the road but if its one dog on the tree I put that one dog on a lead while the others finish hunting

I'm just the opposite, When I send one on I stay close to the tree & make them go. Getting to old to be walking back to trees.

if he was my dog,i would lead him away bout 50 yards from where you killed the coon, then shine the light in the direction you want him to go and turn him loose,watch him with your tracker and if you see him going back to the area where you killed the coon,holler no and bump him with a shocker enough to get his attention.dont ever let him get away with it and i think he will start to understand its better to go find another coon then getting lit up. lol

Wisdom through experience!!! I've hunted all the registries and I have cut in the same woods in all. Nothing more aggravating than a dog that goes back to a previously scored tree.
