teaching a dog to get deep

How do you teach a dog to get deep and not be walk hunted

hunt m with one that knocks the back out of the woods

You can take a little bit of "get in the dark" out of a pup but it is pretty near impossible to put some of it into to one. How deep a dog hunts is largely an inherited trait. About the only thing you can do to incourage it a little is to hunt them with a hard going deep hunting dog for a while and hope they follow but a lot of the closer hunting dogs are just the way they are and aren't gonna get much deeper.

They either have the desire, or they dont. In my opinion.

Not sure what or how deep you are talking about but you can keep a deep hunting dog. One the ranges out 400 yards or so is plenty good to get a coon struck. In fact while the other dog is getting deep I've already struck and treed one and working on number two before Mr. Deep hunter gets struck.

i would much rather a dog hunt soon as i unsnap it rather than see how deep it can get before really hunting. i would rather walk to 4 300 yr trees than to walk to one 800 yrd tree. I like dogs that hunt close and work their way deep if needed. have no use for one that just goes and goes running by coon.

i have one at the house now that takes them as they come. he trees plenty within 400 yrd but will get deep if needed. this is the reason i started hunting curs 7 yrs ago. got tired of running past coon. got a good walker here now as i shared above. gets them treed/

try cutting your dog loose further from the woods. get it used to running 200-300 yards before it hits the timber.
shoot less coon. never ever shoot one out behind it.
run your dog with other hard going dogs.

I try huntin with hard goin dogs but shes so independent she wont hunt with them she goes 200 yards hunts out an area and comes back if she don't strike

what ur wantin in that hound ur not going to get then jmo

You might try putting a feeder up, let her get used to knowing where it is and once she does, turn her loose a little further away every time.
If she likes the idea of coon being shot out, when she comes in to you load her up and go shoot a coon out to the dogs that went deep.

some dogs just dont go deep its a fact. i have hunted with some nice medium hunting dogs. if your treeing coon close why would you want a deep going dog

Had a little mt. cur that hunted tight the first couple of years I worked him and then I hunted him 1/2 a season with a go yonder hound.....and I had me a go yonder cur.

Ain't nothing going to work. I'll bet good money on it. Plus it seems to me. Just from experience. Its these extremely independent pups that never make my kind of get through yonder north ga type of dog. Just from what I've seen.

i've been reading this site and others for years. this question has been asked many times. the most common answer is: it's in the genetic makeup. it's either a deep hunter or not. you're not going to change it. that is, after the dog has reached it max, that's it.

Lets trade . I got a racehorse. He ought to be a greyhound the way he scats. Wish he could run a track 1/4 that good.

Here are some things that I've done. These are providing the close hunting dog is started and should know what is going on but just is afraid to venture too far.

1. Spot hunt with hard going dogs. When the close hunter comes back to you, put him in the box. If you can drive around as close to the other treed dogs as possible, leave him in the box where he can hear the dogs tree. After you get the dog going hard off the lead, you can then start training to go hard off a recast from a tree.

2. If other dogs get deep and tree and you have to walk to their tree, tie the dog back that didn't get there till late, and knock the coon out to the other dogs. Ignore Mr. Late and don't let Mr. Late have any taste of the coon.

3. Do Not walk the dog much to get it to go hunting. You will just develop a habit for the dog to have to have you take it hunting.

4. Don't knock out very many coon, and when you do, try to give it the coon that it really worked for and or had to go deeper to tree. You need to set the distance to determine how deep is deep. Sometimes it is just a confidence thing with dogs and they need to find out you will go wherever they go to get them.

5. I have taken dogs by themselves, let them out and when they came back after a short or non hunt, I put them back in the box and take them home and don't praise, pet, or show them that I even think they exist. Have seen them knock a hole in the dark after a couple nights of this.

Be careful what u ask for u just may get it.... I have a female that will tree close coon but no afraid to get deep....just lastnite I walked a mile to her in the hills of Missouri & thru a small river....even though I saw the coon I wonder if it is worth the walk....lol....a mile in & a mile out.....

i think i would prefer one that hunts closer but will still free cast hunt. when it comes back i can just go farther down the road and cast again. i don't think one can go a mile in these woods wiwth the aid of a bull dozer or brush saw.
