Anyone ever try feeding their dogs coon meat. Just wondering if there is any problems with that

Don't see why it would hurt unless they have rabies or give your dog coon dog paralysis maybe boil it first?

coons

I knew of an old timer who would cook coons in a big cast iron pot outside for his hounds.

Cook it off the bones and add some corn mill.. then just cut and divide..

Just a little info on rabies .. It cannot survive in the air and will die after a hour or so when exposed. It cannot live in a dead animal. and it cannot live in in meat that is frozen

We sell the hides, but don't shoot a whole lot either. Maybe 30-40 a season if that. I'll try anything but I'm not too crazy about anything that has a real gamey, greasy taste.

people now have never developed a taste for wild game meat, except for deer. times past, people would eat just about everything. i won't kill it if i don't intend to skin it and feed it to my dogs. i skin it, split it and put it on the grill. cook a few minutes, feed it to the dogs. same thing with possums. they love it. as for me, i hardly ever eat meat of any kind.

You throw them the whole carcus? Maybe a stupid question but will the bones tear up there throats or no? My fiance is real nervous bout me feeding them anything with small bones

Posted by chadf on 10-22-2012 09:31 AM:

cook it as coon like bear and pig can contain some harmful parasites. If you od cook it remove the bones as cooked bone doesn't break down like raw bone.
As far as personel consumption coon is pretty good eating. I've made stew, chili, jerky, and BBQ. Haven't tried it fried yet but I'll have to wait another year B4 I can coon hunt again. Not sure why as hunters on here some folks are blind to good table fair or at least put some good use to the resource they harvest.

Posted by krazyluckjack on 10-22-2012 05:21 PM:

I have ate it,, Would have to acquire a taste for it. But it wasnt too bad, kinda greasy but it was fried, maybe if it was cooked different it would have tasted different and maybe not as greasy.

any time someone mentions feeding dogs meat on the bone red flags go up. there is some risk of problems but i doubt the risk are anywherer near as high as many folks believe. yes, i gave whole chunks of cooked carcass to the dogs, on the bone. later, as i'm cutting the grass i see boney dog droppings. i think any dog with some sense can eat a bone and know not to swollow a big bone. i don't give my dogs pork chop bones or steak bones or small heavy bones. maybe you have to train them when they're young with chicken rib bones.

My Popaw up until he passed away would take coon bout over anything , momaw would cut the legs off boil em for awhile til they where real tender soak em in buttermilk and fry em in flour n corn meal , my Popaw and great uncle loved em , I was never around when they had em or I'd try one . People say shark meat isn't any good either but I catch a mess of sand sharks every year at the beach and fillet em and butterfly cut em slap on the grill with mrs dash lemon pepper seasoning and butter , man you talking bout good , shark a real flakey meat but trick is to gut em out right away so their liver don't release toxins out in the meat and gives it a fishy taste but that's with any fish not just shark , not suppose to make a steady diet of shark neither because their high in mercury but ouce a year won't hurt anything .
