Coon Squallers

What is a coon squaller that is working now?

I had a Zepps and have lost it somewhere and looking for another one. I have to say though I was never really impressed with it's ability to get a coon to look.

Anybody using the Banshee? Youtube video of it sounded pretty good.

Open to pretty much any suggestions.

Old timomthy ball squaller works good. Had one for 20 years. Cheaper too!

Coon call

I use a Tim Ball squall, it sounds good and have even squalled a couple out.

I bought the cheapest piece of crap squaller I could from Nite Light, it's green and made of plastic for my 6yo son to play with, I'm bout to start using it, sounds great and doesn't get jammed up with spit like my more expensive one.

I think I've had about all of them over the years, Ball's, Might Max, Banshee, Zepps. Around last spring I finally came to the conclusion that they do allot more to encourage slick treeing than finding coons and me and my hunting buddy decided to put them all away for a year. Now we are into fall and I'm sure we will never bring them out again and when we are training/pleasure hunting, we ask others to refrain from squalling when our pups are there. We still find'em when they are there and they are there allot more when you leave the squaller at home. JMO.

P.S.
This was no great revelation on my part. Two of the best trainers/pup starters I know of in these parts, Mike Yoder and Dean Miller never used them and never wanted any squalling with the pups they were training. I never saw Marv Schmucker carry one except in a comp hunt. I also understand the majority will never agree with me on this and that is fine too.

I have to say I agree with everything you said there Jim in regards to pups.

Just looking for an edge in finding those hard to look coons. Seems like in the last month or so most of the coons we tree are almost impossible to get to look. Can't remember the last time we walked in and looked up and found one right away.

So coming back to what Jim says (which makes a lot of sense) wonder if squalling after the grease is seen would be positive?

In theory it could. I have noticed myself that most pups will tree harder when you start blowing a squaller. I have also seen pups that quit treeing and look at you or try to come to you when you squall too so it somewhat would depend on the pup.

Going to a comp hunt without a squaller is a hard habit to break, many of us have an almost sort of dependency on them, psychologically if nothing else I suppose. And I'm fine with them in a comp hunt although I could never get results with them so I just don't bother.

The guy wanted to know which coon squaller so I told him what I thought. Personally I agree with everything you said... I haven't used a coon squaller in about 10 years and find them just fine too. Every now and then (if I think I need to squall) I might use some kind of noise out of my mouth that might pass for a sorry coon squall but they look none the less. coon swappers are overrated unless you are in a hunt and you are trying to bring another mans do to YOUR tree. Then it becomes a weapon!!!

I dont even carry 1 anymore, i tried alot of different ones and i would fool with them after we found the coon trying to get a reaction. My conclusion was that none of them do a dam thing. Maybe its just my coon or maybe its my lack of skill but i have in the past offered money for a video of one of these guys that claim they can walk a coon down the tree and no one has ever come through. I did however have one turn and look one night when my cell phone rang. Figured it was probably a sow.

I have personally seen my papaw walk a few different coon down the tree to the point they were right above where the dogs could reach them and they all turned and went right back up after a minute or so. Every time was early in the year so I figure they were all probably sows that had kittens up a tree somewhere close by, we left all of them in the tree though so can't say for sure.

I have also had one look when a phone rung. I've tried to duplicate it at other times by having someone call my phone and never have been able to though.

The old OLT squaller is being made under a different name.. Black and gray in color.. Hard to blow and extremely loud, but it will make them walk and move if they are there..

I can agree with a lot of what has been said here already but the fact is a squaller is a tool and just like any tool it can be used in a positive manor or a negative one. I have to agree with what Jim said about using one before the coon has been seen on a slick tree but for me a squaller is too valuable to just leave at home. Every dog is different and you must use your head but in most cases as we’ve all seen before you can really get a dog fired up on the tree by using one. In some cases I believe it can be just as an effective method of using positive reinforcement for your dog as knocking one out is. I will say this also I rarely carry a gun out of season and I have in many cases jumped a coon out of the tree while using my Banshee squaller. Something I couldn’t have done with my mouth alone, not only that but I was still able to reward my dog without breaking any laws. It’s just my opinion but you want catch me without one while I’m out hunting.

What is a DJ?

Second question where can I find a banshee squaller? Looked at a bunch of sites and most have the Zepps, Tim Ball, and maybe a few more.

I liked the sound of the Banshee from the Youtube video but can't find one online anywhere.

Shane Maxey makes and sells the Banshee squaller. I believe he is backed up on orders right now but he has a thread under the dog supply vendor’s page when he is taking orders again. You can try private messaging him and see if you can get a hold of him that a way. His user name on here is Hoosier Outlaw. Or you can try emailing him at bansheecalls@aol.com . Good luck I hope this helps.

P.S. If you do get one I'd recommend you get all three reeds for it too. I use the "Kitten" reed in the late spring and summer, if there is a sow up there it will really getting her dancing. The "Adult" call works best during the summer and fall and the "Special" really works well during the rut. This is the one I’ve had them bail out on me with, twice! LOL

i think all coon squallers are about the same, main thing is that theres something in the tree to look at.ive made coons look blowing on a blade of grass or a leave, clapping my hands, growling or try growling like a coon, or knocking the tar out of a tree with a club lol. the best thing i ever used though was a carbide light, them things can pop like a shotgun and sometimes a coon will look then.

My recommendations for getting a coon to look in order of importance.....
1. A very very dim light, almost to the point that you can't even see it illuminating the highest point in the tree. Preferably with a red lens.
2. Get as far back as reasonably possible while shining this dim light.
3. If you must squall, do one very short squall and do not "over squall."
4. Still not looking, then peck on the tree while shining your dim light.
5. Maintain short squalls and not many of them or stop squalling altogether.
6. Still not looking, look for a vine or sappling you can shake vigorously. A lazy hunting partner will probably not get this job done correctly. Trust me I know.
7. Keep your light dim through this whole process!
8. Still not looking, then I guess light the tree up BUT only after you have gave a good effort with the dim light.
Many times I have had the coon looking good at the dim light and then brighten it up and him quit looking for good. I have had them start looking again at the dim light but it can be hard.

Posted by Jason Miller on 10-01-2012 11:48 AM:

From a competitive stand point finding the coon is an intrical part of the process that should not be overlooked.. If we score four seperate split trees and it takes me four minutes to find my coon, while on the other hand it takes you seven minutes to find your coon.. In essence, I have gained twelve minutes of hunting time over you and your dog..

I promise that learning how to shine and squall a tree from a competitive stand point is very important..

The dim light slowly getting louder takes to long.

The key is to get to a spot that you can shine the tree the best, and work the tree over hard and fast... If coons are there they are usually easy to find..
