pistol users

To those who use pistols to shoot out coon, what type do you use and whats the pros cons of it? Thinking on purchasing one to pack instead of a rifle.

Ruger Mark 2 with 10 inch bull barrel. Deadly accurate and will reach the highest tree.

Old Ruger Mark II has always been been good for me. You don't have to have long or bull barrel to get the job done, just shoot it and get to know how it hits ... might have to drift sight to make it perfect for you . It's fun and after you get it adjusted, will shoot as good night time as day !

Taurus Tracker 7 shot stainless steel revolver. Nothing more reliable than a wheel gun and the stainless holds up to the elements. Also it sure is fun to see the look on someones face when you roll a coon out of the top of a tall cottonwood tree with one shot.

Smith and Wesson K22 with an 8 3/8" barrel. Does a great job for me. I have also used a Ruger MK I, both are good weapons. I refuse to carry a rifle in the woods at night while chasing dogs.

Ruger Mark II

Pros
A whole lot easer to pack

Cons
Quite a bit louder than a rifle
I use a lot more ammunition

Detroit traffic stop

This post reminds me of this joke:

Seems a guy makes a rolling stop... at a stop sign, and gets pulled over by a local policeman.
Guy hands the cop his driver's license, insurance verification, plus his concealed carry permit.
"Okay, Mr. Smith," the cop says, "I see your CCW permit. Are you carrying today?"
"Yes, I am."
"Well then, better tell me what you got."
Smith says, "Well, I got a .357 revolver in my inside coat pocket. There's a 9mm semi-auto in the glove box. And, I've got a .22 magnum derringer in my right boot."
"Okay," the cop says. "Anything else?"
"Yeah, back in the trunk, there's an AR15 and a shotgun. That's about it."
"Mr. Smith, are you on your way to or from a gun range...?"
Nope."
"Well then, what are you afraid of...?"
"Not a god****ed thing..."

If you hit the coon in the first shot it comes out. Depends how many shots it takes to hit the coon.

Don't see how the leaves would effect the shooting

S&W model22A. I also have a Bushnell red dot scope. Love it and use it all the time. GReat gun.
Leaves do not matter. If you can see the coon or its eyes you can shoot it out.

I personally love my Walther P22. I got the one with the shorter barrel and the detachable laser sight. I don't use the laser sight. I love it and can't think of a negative with it.

Rugger single six hunter.
It comes with a 8 In barrel.

Pros
easier to carry
You can shoot shorts,cb, long rifle in it.

Cons
A lot louder even when shooting CBS
Only have six chances before having to take the time to reload.(in which time coon has a chance to move.

If you are hunting a seasoned dog and may have to walk a lot I would consider one but if you are hunting pups I would stick with a rifle. Or at least a pistol that takes mags.

the question im asking is how many when only seeing an eye hit consistantly the coon the first shot... i hunt with one and im just not that good with it.... sometimes its one shot and sometimes 10... was just curious about others

Posted by walkerdogman85 on 09-24-2012 07:24 PM:

i also use a smith and wesson 22a with a red dot

If you have the crimson lazer sights usually 1 shot, I use the ruger mark II with the target barrell

Posted by Smoke on 09-24-2012 08:05 PM:

I have mine sighted in and practice. Only use one kind of ammo that gives me good groups. Usually less than five shots If all you have is a body shot. 1-2 if its a head shot

Using the one type of ammo is a great idea when using a pistol..I use hollow point mini-mags with good results.

Browning Buckmark with regular iron sights. I have shot out more than a truck load of coons and quite a few bobcats. Easy to carry and rugged.
Adios,
Gary

I highly recommend a Ruger 22/45 with an 8" barrel. The one I used to have the barrel was a slab side they called a great 8. Someone broke into my huntin rig & decided they needed it... Wish I would have caught the POS in the act! LOVED that gun! Been thinkin about gettin another one before this kill season.
