47% What a joke

Just saw this pic on facebook. Give me a break! Who would have thought you might have to work more than "less than 20 hours a week" to pay for college and gas in your car! If i was this kid's parents i would be ashamed! When i went to college i didn't feel the need to rely on my parents or the govt. I saw it as my investment and my debt worked 40hrs a week to pay rent, food, gas, student loans, electricity, and whatever was left beer, all while going to school full time. I will expect the same from my children.

I'm currently going to the university of Tennessee, majoring in computer engineering, I am paying about 8000 a year out of pocket (loans) and I can honestly say that I don't know of a single student on campus taking the recommended course load that can hold down a full time job and is still passing classes. Those more unfortunate than I are paying upwards of 15000 yearly. We're quickly approaching a point where college is costing more money than we can ever hope to pay back so in that regard I understand where this kid is coming from, Romney is taking from the wrong areas to fix the budget as we are the ones that will contribute with income tax and various other taxes in the near future, by taking government money from college grants we are hurting the countries future incomes, on that same note i would like a job when I graduate, call me stupid but I would appreciate that reward for my effort given in school and therefore Obama will not recover my vote for president and the only reason Mitt will is because I don't think he cares about the state of this country and just wants the job as a stepping stone for his own gain and will do nothing to actively try to help the American people.

If your daughter's high school grades were good enough she could probably have gone to a community college for **** near free. You do that for two years then transfer to the state college, utilize whatever federal financial aid is available and the rest you can cover with low interest student loans that you don't have to make payments on until you aren't in school anymore. I doubt her grades were very good since she had someone like you calling people stupid and retarded teaching her.

FATBOY there is exactly whats wrong with this country. My wife and i raised 5 children, 4 of them have degrees that they earned and paid for themselves. We kept a roof over their heads but beyond that it was on them. I dont even understand where the idea originated that the Govt. should educate our children, but this entitlement generation needs to learn to get up early,go to work and build their own life.

They will vote in Nov. with no regard for the welfare of the country, just whats easy for ME ME ME.

Well, I have a 13 yr old who has a dream of going to college. His dream is to become either an engineer, or a teacher/coach (he is a sports fanatic). He is in the eighth grade this year. He knows how hard it is to get thru college (money, transportation, books...etc) that is why he carries a 3.8-4.0 GPA and runs about 65-75 miles a week for Cross Country (since the 6th grade) hoping for a scholarship. He is also working toward highschools credits in 8th grade, yeah it sounds like a lot for his age, but he has been taught "you work for what you get-no hand outs here!" He is smarter than some adults I know. I am not and will not "HAND"him anything. My husband was a Navy Man, honorable discharge and now works in a very well known Propane Industry. I have worked since I was 16, went to college and we have worked our butts off for what we have. Believe me as a kid I used to have to get up go to school, come home change clothes and eat in the car, because when we got to grandpa's~ tobacco was waiting on us. Tobacco is how we had Christmas Presents, we sold produce thru the summer. Then after we were done cutting, spudding, stripping, bailing, and what ever else we had to do for the tobacco, we went home took a shower ate, did our homework and went to bed, ready for the next day.

Kids need to understand that welfare, and Gov't assistance ISN'T a way of life. It is not what we pass down from generation to generation- antiques, silver, jewlery, land and good morals is what is suppose to be handed down.

john you didn't help them at all ? no co-signing any loans ? financial aid is based off parents household income the less you make the more the aid and with 5 kids tells me alot i have 1 and didn't qualify for much finacial aid ! typical republican response as long as it helps me its okay but if helps someone else its welfare !

Posted by CLJohnson on 09-20-2012 02:10 PM:

Just so we can have some numbers to work with:

Any Ten Meal Plan On-Camp $1,566.00
Bus Admin Course Fee $240.00
Engineering Course Fee $216.00
Facility Fee $160.00
Housing Learning Community Fee $50.00
I/S Undergraduate Maintenance $3,901.00
Library Fee $10.00
Non-Commuter Parking Tag $290.00
North Carrick Residence Hall $2,545.00
Prog & Serv Fee-Health $89.00
Prog & Svc Fee-Primary $255.00
Technology Fee $100.00
Transportation Fee $26.00
Undergraduate Study Abroad Fee $5.00

This is my first semester's bill, for those that say "well i went to college and payed for it myself" I would ask when did you go to college? College prices have risen by LARGE amounts over the last few years and don't appear to be dropping. For those of you with younger children, I will say that I had the same aspirations, and my thought process was probably the same "why would someone not go to college, work hard, get scholarships, it isnt that bad". What you quickly find out is you truly are a big fish in a small pond. I graduated 3rd in my class, from a high school rated nationally with a 4.1 GPA, taking AP courses, almost all Honors courses and college course work. I did community involved projects, volunteer fire dept. volunteering for fund raisers, coordinating special olympic events, and starting new clubs within the high school. My point here being there are currently 26,000 other people on this campus that did the exact same things and some did more, the full ride expectations for a major university should be low just because of this. As I said before I am paying roughly 8000 a year, 4000 a semester thanks to scholarships and Gov. aid. With tuition, parking, meals, etc. expected to grow that number will likely grow by the time I get my undergrad degree. I work 40 hours a week in the summer time in a steel factory making electrical boxes to help pay my way actively while going through so I don't get hit with huge loans to pay back (huge being in perspective with those who are paying out of state tuition, 40,000 a year) I work very little during school as I need to keep my grades up to get into grad school, I carry 15 hours of classes to attempt to graduate in 4 years even though the recommended amount for engineers is 12 which coincidentally, is the minimum allowed to be tagged as "full time". I don't think you should be handed anything and have worked to get where I am BUT I do believe that if we are going to cut funding we should look toward something that doesn't impact future generation quite as much, maybe institute a flat tax across the board? Maybe cut back on tax breaks? How about an outlandish idea, cut back on salary for our representatives.

Colleges are as bad as the health care system. No way should it cost that much to go to school. These colleges are getting rich. How many millions does Tennessee rake in off of their football and basketball programs and how many millions do they get from the lottery. It's all a racket, IMO.

College

I work at small college in the midwest, about 11,500 students I see lots of kids struggling to work, meet grades and live. These are not the rich kids with the silver spoon in thier mouth type. Many of the kids are wondering why they go to school because when you graduated in years past, you had a good paying job right out of college about 80-85% was that way. Now you have very few coming out of college with a decent paying job and what i hear constantly is why should I be $50,000 in debt and no job either and have to pay it back in a short period of time.

My daughter works 2 jobs and does 15 credit hours of college time and lives on her own. We support her as much as possible, It can be done. It is very hard to keep grades aup and live on minimum wage and often after you get out of college you can only find minimum wage jobs with no health insurance.

Lets pay our leaders that and no benefits, see how they like it. They think that most people make at least $200,000 a year for average middle class family. It doesn't happen where I live.

By the way our school enrollments is down 2500 students and how many go to military to just get a way to go to college?

A Concerned parent, Jeff Ashmore

I worked full time while I went to college, carrying 15 or more credits a semester. (there are several on here that can attest to that).

And I didn't just barely pass, I graduated Magna *** Laude from what is toughest program at that school.

It's all in what you NEED to do to get ahead in life.

I worked very hard and made a lot of sacrifices in those few years in college. I knew that 4 years of misery would pay off for the rest of my life, so I buckled down and did it.

That's why it really bothers me to have others want everything handed to them from those of us that have worked hard.

Those people that complain about having 60k in student loans are also the people that go and buy a 50k truck that lasts only a few years while the benefits of the education last a lifetime.

Government should help those that help themselves.

I agree

Nothing is better than education, they can't take that away from you and Lone Pine you should congradulated like many other folks. I am just saying it gets disappointing to them ( Kids Now ) when they know that the future is often minimum wage, especially for poorer kids.

We see it every day here where I work, we numbers dropping due to rising cost of tuition. No pay raises for us or minimal 1%. I am glad to just have a job as you see other hardworking folks loose their jobs.

Like today 1200 miners out of work, what a hardship to the families.

I wish best to all, Jeff

Whoa now, you want them to be responsible?! Where do you get off on that? lol

I paid for half, borrowed half (paid it off in 2 years). I worked a few different jobs, drank beer like it was a job, coon hunted like a mad man and maintained a girlfriend (who is now my wife). It wasn't hard. Some people have that kind of desire and drive for life, others hope someone will come along and help them out.

Well if the students did a little more work and a lot less partying and more work. They could prolly pay the defficet down in no time. A 4 to 6 yr degree would be 2 lol... Good point. College is not supposed to be partying and fun all the time. I attended a work study college and graduated without ever owing a cent. Tuition is free and all students are required to work 20 hours a week at a campus job. Three free meals a day and free housing. The only thing that cost me out of pocket was books.

A lot of kids around here will not consider this college because of the work study requirements and would rather attend other schools where they don't have to work.
