Becoming a Bench Show Judge

I applied to become a judge a couple weeks ago. Haven't heard back and I'm getting a little nervous!

So to pass the time.....

What made you want to become a Bench Show Judge?

Have any advice for a newbie?

Have a nice day!
Laura

for me personally, I got tired of showing to the same ones with the same attitudes. so I thought that if I could do it, at least I would be able to give a different perspective and look at the dog and not the handler. also balancing out ground movement as well as bench time. jmo

no Im not. i feel that I give each dog a good look and like me or not, I pick what I think is the best "dog" that day. I feel that I have been fair in my judging...of course those that did not get picked may disagree. the point is: I can live with my decisions and have no regrets.

same here,
what i hate is when you have a bunch of good dogs show and it gets down to what i call toenails and eyebrows and everybody thinks they should have won but you have to choose only one top dog out of several,,
that puts the heat on the judge.

exactly. but as long as you are comfortable with your decision, there are no issues.

I became a judge because I am intrigued by the hounds that I show against week in week out... what better way to know what you have to compete against that by laying hands on those dogs....

I like Cynthia pride myself in being a judge that judges the dogs that are presented to me not who is standing behind the dog. I love to look at the dogs on the ground and love to lay hands on them. There are so many things that you learn about dogs by judging them.

I enjoy every judging assingment that I have had and think that I have been fair and honest in my choices.

You will enjoy it I have no doubt!!

Lisa...

I've never shown under you but I've watched you judge and I like how you are considerate and always give off that positive "vibe". Handlers that have shown under you have commented how nicely you conduct yourself and are very professional before, during and after the bench show.

I became a judge initially because there weren't any available in the immediate area. The clubs around here were having to spend an inordinate amount of money to get someone to come judge our shows. I also enjoyed judging.
As far as advice, I would encourage you to learn as much as you can about canine structure, correct angulation and movement. Once you begin doing your apprenticeships you will get a whole new perspective about showing dogs. Frequently, the best looking/prettiest dog isn't the best, most correct, most balanced dog on the bench. Picking the best dog isn't always the most popular thing to do either, so you will need to develop some "calluses" on your ego. As long as you are making informed, unbiased picks and can look yourself in the mirror it's all good though. Good luck!

I love to show and judge. The many then I go by is bred standards and how the dog handles it's self. You will always have someone that disagrees with your picks, but if you like the ones you pick. That is what counts.
One of the best thing about being a judge for me is getting to help kids or someone that is just getting into showing. I like to see them later on progressing on there handling skills.

Good luck and hope you passed.

I was asked by many to get my BS lisence before I finally did. Like Crossbblue, I often can't even tell who was handling the dog. I try to judge the dog, not how well they stand or how well they are handled.

I love having a great class of dogs; the better the dogs are, the easier it really is to judge. You just have to get picky with the dogs against their breed standards.

I will bet anyone that a well known dog shower in the Bloodlines will win the show ... what do you think?

The winter classic is in my back yard and I bet Joe Blow or Chris Rock wins.

Again, some good....and a few non relevant... posts!
I feel that I'm an honest individual and I can't wait to lay my hands on dogs and get the "feel" of comparing them to their set standard. Always nice for a club to have a few people to choose from when a judge is needed.

First thing those dog showers learn is to work & train hard with a good dog or they're wasting time & money and never winning.
