Ot Trapping Yote's??

Thought about doing some trapping this year for yote's i aint ever done it anyone got any tips? And wat is the best foot trap to use for it? Thanks

Best trap? Ya may not think so, but that is almost as bad as asking Dodge, Ford, or Chevy. 90% of the traps will need some modifications. The best are MB 550 and 650, JC Conner, CDR, and KB.

All the others are best if modified. Coyotes are very hard on traps.

Best advice I have is bed the trap FIRMLY. Nothing will ruin your chances of catching a coyote faster than having a trap that moves when the coyote steps on it. Once they dig up one trap because they felt it move under their foot they become sang hard to catch and will give you fits. Another good piece of advice is add an extra swivel halfway up the trap chain. The more swiveling points you have and the shorter you can keep the trap chain the better off you are. Also always double stake your traps or use earth anchors. As far as the best trap question goes the feller above is right all of those are dang nice traps but most of them are pretty pricey. If you can find some used Northwoods offset jaw number 2's they are a pretty darn good trap and I have picked them up for as cheap as $5.00 apiece. The Bridger offset jaw number 2 is pretty much identical to the Northwoods trap also. Like the guy said though they will need some modification but that stuff is not to hard. Just clean up the latch or night latch it and square of the dog with a file. Make sure the pan tension is set good and that the pan sits nice and level. Add an extra swivel to the chain and double stake butterfly and you are all set. Good luck.

The wildest thing I heard was

from a buddy down in alabama who said guys down there trap them like the gators on swamp people. They take big treble hooks and bait with chicken and hang several feet off the ground with cable and when the yote jumps up and grabs the meat, that is it. He had a one of his hounds caught like that and almost lost him, but got him down but it was a mess. No different I guess than a foot trap. I wouldnt trap them where coonhunters hunt, but I have some around me and sure would like to thin um out.

I have seen yotes live traps in catalogs, anyone ever use one?

That treble hook method does work. Use a good swivel about halfway up. Tie the cord about 2-2 1/2 ft off the ground. Best to tie it to a green limb with some give to it and make sure they can't wrap around something and pull off the hook. They will fight and twist a lot. Most are dead in the morning but some aren't. It's not for the faint of heart but effective. It will catch neighbors dogs too, just remember the dogs caught are very loud and can be heard until u get there.

Snares work good too just find out where they are using a fence and line them up. You might catch some deer too so Becareful. I tried this with wild hogs. I made some heavy duty snares out of angle iron and heavy cable. The next morning I caught hogs alright but they completely destroyed and pulled the fence down. The 12inch corner post was missing! 3 nine inch post were broken off at the base and barbed wire was scattered all over the place. All the snares were broken at the point of attached. I needed BIG swivels. Got them and It works. Be sure and tie them to trees because they twist much worse than a coyote. And they are supper stout.

So we have coon hunters on here actually talking about useing treble hooks hanging from tree limbs to catch coyotes. What a bunch of morons. This guy wanted some real live advise. Not a bunch of bs. Not only do i coonhunt but i also set a trap or two during the year..... Comments like that are what organizations use against us to try and take away our God given rights. If you make this set, I will gurantee you will probally catch dogs, cats, and birds. And maybe...maybe a stupid half sick coyote. Not only is this illegal but it is unethical. I live on a big ranch and don't have any neighbors close by plus I'm the only one who coon hunts near 20 miles from my house. When I coon hunt I can take em up. I hadn't used these in years but they do work. As far as ethical goes I could care less about ethical when it come to protecting me and mine. If I could get my hands on cinide I'd use it on yotes and pigs too. Thank god I still live in a state where you are still free to do what you want.
