Old Tyme Finley River

In studying the history of the Finley River Strain I always have an eye open for hounds that remind me of the hounds of the past from this strain. Since it has been over 55 years since Finley River Chief was born a person might think the traits of the old Finley River Strain wouldn't be showing up. But I have found out that there are still hounds that have been bred up close to the Finley River Strain and they are still passing on these traits through their pups and grand pups.

The wonderful and frustrating thing about dog breeding is depending how the genes line up you may end up with a very dominate producer that passes on the traits you are looking and breeding for OR end up with a hound that isn't a dominate producer because of the gene lineup. Some are better at trying to figure this out then others are but after the cross is made all anyone can do is hope the genes line up the way they are trying to breed to get the traits they are breeding for.

As a younger guy I was fortunate to have been around a lot dogs that were close bred on the Finley River Strain. I hunted some of Mr. Derden's hounds for him. He was breeding his hounds on Finley River Chief and Shetler's Sonny Boy. From that experience it showed me some of the traits that were in the background of these hounds that make up the strain called Finley River. After and during that experience I was exposed to numerous hounds bred up close on the Finley River Strain with the numerous good traits that the fans of this strain desire and look for.

When I am fortunate to observe a hound of today that has numerous traits of this past I pay attention to them because that is a good sign they may have the brought the genes forward that made this strain famous and popular. I have seen a few hounds that have shown me they are putting these traits in their pups. I'll list one of the hounds I have noticed and later on will list some of the other ones but I wonder how many more of these type of hounds are out there that we may not know are out there? The old coon hound tied out behind the barn that has never seen or been in a hunt.

One of the hounds of today that has caught my eye in reference to the hounds of the past is GRAND CHAMPION FINLEY RIVER BUDDY.

Buddy goes back to Finley RIver Chief over 50 times. Grand Nite Champion Monroe's Finley River Joe, Grand Nite Champion Mear's Finley River Dan, Grand Champion Nite Champion Richardson's Vickie, Grand Nite Champion Claxton's Finley River Spot, Grand Nite Champion Spring Creek Smokey, Finley River Chief Jr., Nite Champion Rash's Iowa Polly, Nite Champion Flat Branch Joker Chief, Grand Nite Champion Harrod's Kentucky River Jack, Dual Grand Champion Kentucky River Jill, Grand Nite Champion Finley River Buck, are just a few of the pups or grand pups of Finley River Chief that had an influence on the breed or strain.

In looking at pups and grand pups of Finley River Buddy it is like going back in time. People who are really familiar with this strain will know what I am talking about. He goes back to Monroe's Finley River Joe at least 10 times and Mear's Finley River Dan at least 13 times. He also goes back to Claxton's Finley River Spot and Spring Creek Smokey at least a couple of times each. Richardson's Vickie is in his pedigree at least 5 times and Rash's Iowa Polly at least 4 times, two of Chief's good reproducing daughters. Add Finley River Chief Jr. and Flat Branch Joker from some of Chief's famous crosses. Also he has one of Finley River Chief's half sisters in his pedigree at least 7 times.

From looking deep into his pedigree it is obvious why he is producing so many of the old Finley River traits. How many other hounds out there have the pedigree and genes lined up to create a hound that produces the desirable traits of the Old Tyme Finely River Hounds that people may have never heard of?

Very interesting! Those dogs were and still are my all time favorites. To this day nothing, yes, nothing compares to what I've seen out of those dogs at all hands down... Period!!! Tough, tough , tough dogs that never saw a vets office. Drive a track like no other could hot or cold. Literally tree all night long if they had too and ready to hunt again tomorrow. Yep, that was my kind of dog and those were the days.

I no of two hounds that are just like what your talking about a buddy of mine hunts them for a old pleasher hunter they had never been in a hunt till a few years back they was just two ol coon dogs tied up out back phil manda ownes them hi-po hounds on hear not sure what there breed like but can saty on a chain all summer and still tree ya a truck load of coon in the winter hi-po buck & hi-po rose both granded out in verey few hunts

My first Finley river dog Tom was directly out of Finley River Dan and a female out of FR Ky Jack. We stayed with that line for years and then it got so diluted with other blood they weren't the same type of dog. Guess you can say we weren't very good breeders we were just hunters. Up until late I have a friend in spring town Texas with about the last of what I'd still consider ole tymey FR dogs and he's got that blood pretty much gone. Although he has a year and a half old male he got from me that I wish I had back. I don't think he'll be like Tom but I bet he'd do.

History nutt.....

I have found two of those really nice bred dogs out behind the barn. These two dogs will throw balanced pure old coon dog types. One is the diesel dog on here and mud run Milo who I am sure you know about. Diesel is out of a sister to Milo.
right off their pedigree, they are double radar bred and double coma bred. Milos momma was a neice to uncle cross so that is how the doubling occured.
the females from them reproduce the same as the males do. No hot nosed treeing idiots from either of these two studs. They throw smart, hard hunting, loud, independent old timey coon dogs much like ole spring creek rock and radar and finley river chief threw.

Milo only has about 100 plus pups and diesel just got bred for the first time at 7. I recognized the pedigree and immediately got a pup. I knew what he would throw and I havent been disappointed. I have an almost 3 month old pup that operates like a grown dog. can figure out anything already. you could put her in a maze and she would figure it out. That is intellegence. as you well know, that is dna and genetics. Not man made.
that is what I look for in a stud dog. a dog that produces intellegence. I can train a smart dog pretty easily and quickly.

Finley River Traits

Myself and a friend of mine both have dogs out of Carters Turkey Creek Teddy and John Monroes Tree Talking Magic. These dogs have a lot of the old traits showing.

I have a nice finley river pup, but Im having trouble getting him to stay put at the tree. When he does tree he is acurate, and he has a good nose on him too. He is a first strike dog. He can smell coons before "coondogs" can smell them. But like I say, im having some issues getting him to stay treed.

I hunt Comanche bred dogs, But I have a 6 month old female out of Lonnie Mears' Thunder dog that is 7 mos. old she has treed 6 squirrels and caught 1 ground hog. She has been running loose. Today when I got home she came to meet me as usual and all of a sudden she was gone. I got out of the truck and saw her on a tree. When I walked in to it the tree the house cat bailed. She came and greeted me and then went back to the tree. She circled it and took of after the cat and treed it again. NOT BAD FOR A 7 MONTH OLD SHOW BRED PUP.

The Comanche bred dogs are known mostly in Texas, Because most people have beaten on the bench by them. I hunt my dogs and you couldn't have found a better reproducer than Nitech Grch 'PR' Harris' Jw comanche Luger or Ch Nite Ch 'PR' Comanche's Flag creek Gus but they are coon dogs. Serious FINLEY RIVER LINE BRED dogs.

Look to the futre with GRCH 'PR' J.W.'S COMANCHE LUGER'S SON AND 'PR' JW'S COMANCHE FLAG CREEK BOBBY. Bobby will be in hunts soon. Both will be performance sires in 2013 for a reason.

The Skuna River dogs are bred back heavy on McCallisters Finley River Banjo.I have a couple young dogs that are linebred Skuna River top and bottom. They are real smart. I have a 7 month old male that is already tracking and treeing like an old dog. He does have a tightly curled tail.I don,t know if this is a throwback trait to something in there or not. He definitely has the brains and hunting traits. I have a 14 month old female bred similiar that is also running and treeing and learning real fast.Wimp Aron did an article for the magazine telling the breeding of his dogs and I was not surprised to see they were heavy Finley River. The old man in Miss. where Wimp got his original breeding stock had bought pups off some of the dogs that originated the Finley River line.These Skuna River dogs when bred pure and not outcrossed are real good cold nosed track dogs and very accurate. They also seem to compliment other strains when bred into them.This article on the Skuna River dogs is in the March 2012 issue of Prohound. It starts on page 56.

I have hunted with alot of the old finley river myself did not care for the coarse hair,flag tails or there track speed to me they where more pleasure dogs which there is nothing wrong with that if that is what you like.
