Blasto

is Blasto communicable? my vet said it is and most what i find on the internet says it is rarely transfered from dog to dog. who has experience with this, i had to put a nice dog down and now another of mine has developed a cough and it has me worried.

OUTLAW REDBONE. ( Buck Ratlif ) He had one that they managed to save. ( Moose )
It was a long road. He's blind in one eye. But seems to be fully recovered. It took a team of dedicated guys to do it.

had a lab that was a yard dog die from blasto, but did not effect the other two dogs in was in dailey contact with..

its a fungal spore that lays dormit in damp soil. beavers tend to spread the spore in there travels. dogs dig in dirt and inhale the spore and infects there lungs. when it gets full blown, there lungs will fill with fluid and scar tissue. it will also cause skin ulcers that wont heal. a young teenage girl in northern wi. died from blasto a few yrs back.

months of antibiotics, it starts out like pneumonia. cool damp soil like around beaver ponds.

my dog was showing no symptoms up until a week before i had to put him down, the chest x ray showed it had taken over 95 percent of his lungs, the vet at the emergency clinic said he would never make it so i had to put him down, she said if the fungus was treated immediately after he inhaled the spores he only had about a 65% chance of making it, the treatment usually causes renal failure, blindness, and other major side effects... i will never let a cough go unchecked again

James Atwell had it affect his "Streak" dog... littermate to Trouble. The vets at VATech said the same thing...........put him down...he won't survive.
James wanted to beat the odds and kept Streak alive. They fed him pure beef liver. Made a miraculous comeback.Still bind in one eye and lost alot of his voice...............but he's still with us!
