were did they come from and how did they ever get recognized as a coonhound breed?

they have been around for many yrs.there are breeders in n c & also s c .find it hard to believe you guys have never heard of the lep. curs aka hounds

I've heard of them before,, even looked at some on this forum. but i stuck with the blue dogs.

I now have 7 registered ones and a walker 1/4 bred left. I have been weening my way off 45 years of Walkers for about ten years now. Read the ALBA for the official history of where they came from. They did not come over on the Mayflower. There is all kinds of stuff in them , Meaning CUR.
And if old LEAD was a Walker I'll kiss yours. They have the Mearle gene in them. They can be merle or solid if bred right and Deaf dumb , blind and crazy if bred wrong. The ones I have listen good but not as good as a collie no matter what the claims are. I kept my best walkers that I could tolerate, meaning not hunt the next county, fast, and all of what I liked, and crossbred them for a good while. I ended up with crossbreeds that no matter how good they were at treeing coons was always used as an excuse to jew me down in price. So I went to Full BLOOD AMERICAN LEOPRD HOUNDS and haven't missed a lick on how hard they run. A few months later starting to tree for my line. They can even take a colder track than the Walkers I thought were so good and move it better. They got a good ways to go to have a COMA type tounge. and hold onto a tree once you get there like a beetle shell. They are a work in progress. Some every now and then under the right conditions win a UKC hunt. THere are not alot of them. You seeing only one does not surprise me. There are breeders of different lines scattered all across the US.

Thanks for input on them sounds like a work in progress but maybe they will come on years down the road .... breed a little english in them lol maybe it will help them come on little faster

That's a Funny thought. The Leopard registery is CLOSED. The crossbreeds would have to be registered as English but it would probably help English get better. LOL. About like putting a little English in the Walkers LOL.

Leps

Leps are just like any other hound breed, they have a wide range of appearances, mouths, and hunting styles. Doesn't really matter what style of dog you prefer, you can probablly find a line of Leps that fit your tastes. My Lep, Shine, looks like a hound, sounds like a hound, hunts like a hound, and contrary to what L.Lyle has to say handles like a border collie. Mine hunts just as deep, fast, and hard as any walker I have eber hunted with. He most definately is not afraid to get in the dark in and if coon are not moving he will put you in strange country in a hurry. He doesn't run by coon though, he will tree one at ten feet or two miles off of the tailgate. He gets his mouth open, honestly, but quick and runs with a big tenor bawl mouth on the ground. He comes on the wood with a dying locate and trees with a long chop. The things that make many of the Leps I have hunted with are accuracy and their natural handle. My Lep is the most accurate hound I have ever seen turned loose. When he trees there is either a coon or a legitamate den hole every time. He goes months on end between slick trees. They are so rare that each time he slicks I am shocked. His natural handle is unreal, I can call him off of a hot track, a tree, or a tree across a river. Doesn't matter if I call he is coming. The only time I ever leash mine is at the nite hunts because the rules say I must. When he trees I just walk in, shine it, see the coon, give him an "atta boy" and tell him to go get another one. He will leave the tree at run and go hunting for another one. Seems like every time I turn him loose in a hunt I hear comments like- "I didn't think a Leopard would sound like that" or "I thought these curs where close hunting dogs?" I completely disagree with L.Lyle that conditions have to be right or the stars have to allign for a Leo to win a hunt or two. Mine and many others I have seen have what it takes to consistantly win anywhere in the country and at any level of competition. Are they perfect? No, but then again what dog is? The biggest difference for me between my Lep and any other dog I have ever hunted with is pleasure. Every single night I hunt mine I leave the woods happy he is the funnest and most pleasureable dog I have ever hunted with. Call anytime or come for a hunt if you wanna learn more about Leopards. You just might be supprised at what you find out.
