Caged game question
I noticed that the prevailing opinion is to let your cur/feist develop naturally. I have never used caged game to train feist I had as a teen or coonhounds I had later. Do any of you use a squirrel/coon in a cage? I always took my dog with me and put them in the woods as much as possible and instincts did the rest. Thanks.
There are a whole lot of opinions on this. Seems most people are either all for it, or dead against it. Personally I don't think you will have to use them if you have a good supply of them in the woods. If your pup has the natural instincts most tree dogs do. However I don't think it hurts the pup to work them on caged game as long as you don't overdo it. The key thing if you do use caged game, is get the pup interested, then take him to the woods. Too much caged game can be bad. I saw a guy had a coondog he had used caged coons on so much, if it even saw a live trap or a roll cage that was empty, he started treeing and going crazy for it. Wouldn't tree a lick out in the woods, only interested in a cage.
