A dog not opening on track?

I hate when a dog is silent on track. How do you fool with them to get em to strike the track hard? At least it's not a babbling problem, but I do t wan one of those either

how much a dog opens on track is bred in. even if the sire and dam were open trailers,there is a silent dog somewhere in the wood pile behind it. it had to be bred in for it to be there. some smart dogs do learn if they shut thier mouth they can sneak away from other dogs or ambush the coon. but again the brains were bred in for it to have the sense to learn to do it..
trying to change what is bred into a dog would be like trying to change a blueticks color to the color of a red bone.

I figured TC, but wondered if some folks might have fooled with it with some success. Also just so you know I've learned a lot from your posts on another forum and just want you to know its appreciated

How is the dog bred ???? I have seen dogs start out to be open an the older they get tighten up an go silent.... Have heard of a dog that was silent till it was 3 but usely they go the other way.

a silent dog is a silent dog. There s no way to change it.

This winter, most times a silent dog will win!!!

SILENT, with accuracy is a deadly combination. This a trait i like open very little not to draw any attention to themselves then BAH BAM !!!!! Its over have a coon and you will win alot of cast. JMO...

most tight to semi silent dogs i have owned and been in the woods with will get under coon a little faster than a very open dog. i love a tight/semi silent dog. they seem to come out of nowhere and get treed. the other dogs just stand on their head

you will definitly catch more game with a silent dog

Get you a piece of something with coon scent on it. put it in a plastic bottle like a salt shaker with a flip top lid. Every day give it a smell of it and get it to bawl. As soon as it bawls give it a piece of hot dog. Get it to were any time it smells it he will bawl to get the hot dog. Build excitement over scent alone that is what makes them open. If anything will help that should do it. Be sure and pet and make a big deal of it opening on scent while in the bottle. If you can get close when it is tracking and it does open on ground. Tell it good dog.j Don't do enough to distract it just good dog. So it knows it is pleasing you.

A swim race did the trick for my semi-silent hound.
Now it opens in the woods as it trails, that was hard for me to get used to.
One thing I have noticed, the dog is not that fast anymore.
I liked it as a semi-silent type dog,not an open trailer.
I sacrificed speed for open trailing,IMO not a good decision.

i may not know what i am talking about but why would you want a dog to be mouthy on track.i like mine to run heads up not sayin much but pushin the track hard.

How old is this hound and do you hunt him alone or with another more mature hound ? alot of times a younger hound wont open behind another dog especialy if they are slower, to me that is a big plus on his part , it means hes learning to keep up and how to make pickups on a loose .......

i have a young dog out of legend that is for the most part quit till she is almost treed and I dont really like it but she is really good about having the coon. and is really good about figuring out a rough track. I guess you can say you take the good with the bad if your a comp hunter

If its a coon treer and you don't like the silent part I feel sure if you put the dog up for sell it will be gone in a hurry. There are a ton of silent gr.nite ch. out there.
