To me it means their close relatives made proven coondogs at a high rate. They PROVED it, most likely in the form of nite hunt titles.

They have littermates that made good dogs, half siblings that made good dogs. Their parents are proven, as are their grandparents. Much further back than that doesn't matter as much, but is a plus if they are.

most cases today WELL BRED dogs means all grand which does not always translate into well bred. performance should out weigh papers in titles when it comes to breeding. lots of good reproducing males and females out there that are as solid of a coon dog as you will find that does not get put into the hunts. got to think about this too, 70% of the every night die hard coon hunters do not competition hunt. they hunt really nice and well bred dogs but they do not care about the titles.

i could care less about titles as along as the coon hound hunts good.

To me it means that the dog has a pedigree that I would find useful and be confident in my future breedings if on the off chance that pup happens to turn out into a decent dog.

todays meaning..

means the ancestors are titled.but to me,it don't mean there coondogs anymore!!! from what i've seen, owned and hunted with.
i like the saying;"papers don't tree coon"

Posted by Cleo on 07-25-2012 09:56 PM:

You say papers dont make any differance but they do. Id much rather base my kennel around a hound with parents and grandparents that have proven themselves in the woods, in the reproductive area and in whatever else your interests are in.

That being said, you all know as well as I do that there are a lot of real coondogs out there that will never be comp hunted or anything else. Those are coondogs as well.

your right...but!!

i've also hunted with and bought for their bloodline/papers.
grnite. and nitech. or direct off worldch. males that were 50% accurate,me too's, or wouldn't go hunting alone!!

there gone, but the coondog is still here.
hunt with the hound or its offspring.if you like the traits and its what you need to make you better, breed to it.
not the papers.

the walker line don't need anymore hot nosed "tree dogs"

AMEN!

People need to THINK about what they are doing when they start breeding just to sell puppies. Ive seen it too many times! Butt loads of pups that cant be sold so they offer them to "Youth hunters " for free.

Sad......

lots of people think just because a dog is titled or won a big hunt it can reproduce......not the case. look at Hardwood Dan back in the early 90's for example. he had all the dogs in his pedigree, he won big and i personally hunted with him and mr paul sheffield. dan was a heck of a coon dog and mr paul one of the nicest men i have ever met. people need to practice breeding what works not what looks good

Full Blood

I was driving by this gentlemans house one day and noticed a nice looking young dog laying in the yard. I couldn't help myself, I had to stop and check on this pup. I asked him if he was for sale, yes, I will sell him. Then I asked, is he full blood and he said "Yes H'es Extra Fullblood". I turned what was possibly was the best blooded dog on earth dpwn!!ha

proven

what i want to breed my female to is a line of dogs proven to run and tree there own coon,, titles don,t mean jack to me when it comes down to it,,,my female can do it all alone why would i breed her to something else ,,i like a line that has drive,is accurate and very little trash problems,,that is well bred to me

well bred is just that you have got the odds stacked in your
favor but you never know till you try it and they all must get
something differnt some start earley some start late and some
still dont make the grade

I don't think I use the phrase ... hmmm ... maybe because what many consider well bred do not really interest me.
