how do you clean out pm box?

i have deleted all my pm messages,but can't get any it says box is full.

You have to delete your sent items and your inbox.

I have done all that

but there was about 3 old ones that were about 3 years old that just dissapeared, but it shows that I have them in my total and when I delete everything, the number still shows up.
