track jacking

I have a young dog that is a nice track dog when hunted with another dog,You can hear and watch on the garmin that he leads the track,picks up the majority of the losses and really does a fine job.However when hunted alone he struggles to figure out which way the track is going and really beats and bangs on a working track.He will normally figure it out and have the coon .I like this male and he is only 14 months old with a nice mouth and good hunt.Do you think he will learn to track better by himself?

Yeah he is young and needs alot more exsperiance.Hunt him steady from here till the end of season.Then you will know what you got.Plenty of boot time in the woods is key. JMO Hope it helps.

At this point I don't think the other dog is doing him any good. Hunt him hard.

i thought maybe the other dog was helping him work in the right direction

If you have any corn fields to put him in that would really help his tracking ability. I have seen alot of young hounds in his situation that a couple of good hard hunting weeks in the corn fields really cranks them up. Sounds just like a confidence issue and he is more confident when the other hound is there helping him along. I would be willing to bet once you get him straightened out your other hound may have issues with keeping up with him. Good luck!!!

does your dog do this on all the tracks he runs by hisself or just the cold ones?

light ring or dark rings?you lost me there

I would say mostly working tracks because i have seen him strike and drive a track straight to a tree with a coon.I have also seen him strike a seperate track from the old dog and they both work different tracks and split with coon.It real hard for me to figure out,i cant tell if he gets over excited and just over runs the track then comes back and picks it up or he just cant tell which way it went.has me scratching my head.

The ring counting was for another thread, I don't know how it got put on this one!! LOL Probably did have you scratching your head though didn't it!!! GOOD LUCK with your hound and just give him all the tracks he can handle.

No pun intended but if he is track jacking he is not a good track dog and if he is with company he is riding someones shirt tail, You have got to be honest with yourself to figure out how to fix your dog..... JMO

Brandon,I never claimed he was a good track.However he is very young and i can guarantee he is not riding the older dogs coat tails.I am very honest with my self about my dogs thats why i ask for ideas.Many guys would enter this pup in the hunts and he would win.

a dog want never learn to tree a bad track unless you let them learn how. if it seems that a dog mostly tackles only bad tracks and they backtrack alot on them, they might not be a track dog.ive seen some pretty good track dogs that would back track a little when they first struck, but soon straighten it out, ive also seen dogs that would back track a little, but they would shut up until they had it running one way. if that dog was mine, i would hunt him by hisself as much as iam able. if he looks good on a hot coon, put him were theres thin coons, youll be able to tell more about him and he will learn to tree them tough coons if hes got it in him. good luck with him.
