How to Pick a Pup

I am wanting to know some tips and tricks that everyone uses to choose what pup they want to keep out of the litter. Input would be appreciated.

when i pick a pup i look for the one that is the most daring and seems to be interested in getting off on his or her own to go see whats around them, also the one thats not shy of people. plus im looking for good color.

with bloodhounds and labs ive always used food in hidden in ym hands to see which ones used or wanted to use their noses.

Just close your eyes and pick one! There's no way to tell how they will turn out!

I like mine to have 4 feet and a tail other than that close your eyes and pick one.

There is one thing i will add to the collective wisdom already expressed.

Pick one that you like and that likes you. If you don't like it, it will never reach its full potential ... what ever that may be.

I always pick the one with the biggest butthole, no joke. Seems to work well for me. Guess that makes me an oldtimer.

Unless I have one that has really caught my eye for some unknown reason I keep the one that's left after all of the ones leaving have been picked.

Posted by R_Wilson on 07-04-2012 05:28 AM:

I tell the breeder to send me a pic of the ones left and i pick the one that looks the best.....

If im able to see the litter i just get the boldest

Call it nestalgia if you want, but I just can't own a dog that I think is ugly. However, if it has the biggest butthole in the bunch then it's a sure thing. LOL I really haven't quit laughing since I have heard that one. Honestly though, picking the best is a guessing game, but I would just shy away from the skiddish ones.

Picking a pup

Personally I think you should pick a coonhound pup the same way you would pick any pup. I'd pick the pup that seemed right in the middle of the temperament spectrum. Not the boldest pup because often those become the bullies of the dog world, ie a little more aggressive in temperament which could be a bad thing if you competition hunt. I wouldn't pick the shyest pup either because you want a dog that has enough confidence to handle most things in life without too much anxiety. There is usually a pup or two in a littler that seems to be right in the middle--not too bold or not too shy and that's the one I pick.
Of course if I am picking for shows, I want to pick one with good conformation--good color, good head and good tight feet. Good feet are important in the hunting department too as a dog with tight feet can cover ground better than one with flat feet (or most times anyway).
I also agree with the person who said that you should pick a puppy that you like and that seems to like you. One that wants to please you and one that you feel good about. Of course knowing the traits of the parents ahead of time is a good thing too. If the sire or dam is a hard-head or a bone-head, you can count on some of the pups being that way too.
Generally anything we feel good about is something we tend to put the most energy into and you will work harder with something you like, so absolutely pick a puppy you have a good feeling about.
I've had so many people tell me that you just reach down and pick one and that it doesn't matter, but down through the years of owning many dogs, I think that taking the time to actually watch the pups personalities really does matter. Some people don't think so but dogs have different distinct personalities just like people do. They are born with certain traits and it's up to the person who works with them to bring out the best in them or the worst. Good luck with the pup you get. I hope you pick a winner.

You guys are killing me. I can't stop laughing. I'm so disappointed I just sold some pups, kept a pair for my self and never checked their butt holes. Now I don't know what I got. Lmao

Well one thing is for sure Bengie even though you didn't get to pick the pup with the biggest butt hole your pups definately got stuck with the biggest butt hole owner so you may be alright still! Lmao

I concur. Hard to work with a dog that you don't like. Likability is an abstract thing, you know it when you see it though.

One old timer told me a pup had to have three long hairs under their chin he called em tree hairs. I watched him pick his pup out of two others one had two hairs one had five but the one with three was the one he picked. We both prefered the looks and the mouth on the pup with five but he wouldn't take it he kept the uglier one with three tree hairs. LOL. Don't know if it works everytime or not but it sure did that time the pup turned out real nice.

Another older guy I hint with likes a pup to have as much black as possible on the roof of the mouth.

Me personally, I just pick the pup I like. Can't really describe exactly what it is but it just kind of a combination of looks, mouth, and personality.
